Is it permissible, if a piece of fin is broken off ,to remove the same amount of fin on the oposite side of the flywheel?? How do saw mechs. determin fit of new piston to used jug. Do you use a feeler gauge beside piston or just feel in bore or mike. it.??Thanks Frank

Removing an apposing fin to keep it balanced can work but if you are operating where summer temps are hot you may run into an overheating problem.

Place jug in left hand upside down with spark plug removed. Drop piston with no rings installed into jug. Put thumb or finger over spark plug hole tightly. Turn jug right side up, if piston stays in jug until you release your thumb or finger, you're ok.

A 2 cycle in good condition will run without rings, albeit with a power loss.
