I can get it at a good deal.Seems to have great compression and is in all an all great shape.Just wonderin how it would stack up against my MS390 and whats the biggest bar yall think i can run smoothly?

Thx any decent input appreciated.

I think you will find the weight to be similar between the two saws, the A/V to be vastly superior on the Makita, the air filtration to be superior on the Makita. As for performance, it is faster revving and more powerful (but not a ton more powerful - its not a 7900 or an 066). And it is a lot easier to work on than the 390.

The normal rules for saws in this displacement range apply - it will be happy with 16"-20" full comp in hardwoods, 24" with skip in hardwoods, and 28" running skip in a pinch.

6400/6401 versus 361

Big decision for me,,,God i want a new saw,the mak looks like a good shaped big saw i wouldnt think twice about takin up n the tree with me.(not to keen on the red of dolmar but diggin the blue of the mak)Remember now im a hedge/ornamental/palm guy.(plus lil drainage, irrigation sod, landscapin wanna'be)

pros:
just looks cool............
might have the cha'ching......
If it runs good....., it would be mine.......:)
MAKITA
would have to redesign the saw tray in my truck.....
Ok...
Time for cons:
hmm...
10 days till x-mas
hmmm...
Box store rental......i'm hopin to give it some love..

edit:eek:h yea the cha'ching.........

That's not a bad price at all. The best part is that if you want your 6400/6401 to be more powerful, just buy a Dolmar 7900 piston/cylinder for it. Your MS390 wouldn't even come close to it then.

Just my 2 cents. The 390 you want more power, you still have got a 390.
But with 6401 you get tired of running the small block 350 and want some more power, you can drop a big block 454 down in it to get you a 7900. Many choices with the saw, 6400,7300,7900. See were I went with this. Good Luck, price is right, buy it dont like it, you will still get your money back, plus might even make a buck.

I do not want to pee in the punch bowl, but I had a conversation with the rental manager a my local Home Depot.

He said they could sell any of their rental saws because they were all toast. he went on to say many folks run gas only, no oil mix, and they are burning up the saws.

Are the rental saw sold "as is" or can you have someone check out the saw to make sure you're not paying $$$ for a time bomb?

I called a 2nd Home Depot store, and their rental guy said the same thing.

He also noted this is the time of year they usually sell saws in good shape.

Good luck but be careful.

I just got one and all I have found wrong was 2 lost screws! It even has a new piston and ring in it. It was sold because of the time they owned it not the condition it was in.

And to answer you question the 6401 is much sweeter to run than the 390.
