Greetings,

I'm a first time poster, however, I have been reading posts here for a while. I'm having a problem and I thought I'd post it here and get some feedback.

A friend of mine who is a log salvager brought me a 272 that had been used by one of the local helicopter logging companies. He got it for a case of beer. Anyway, it had obviously been sitting for a long time and I could not get it to run for more than a few seconds.

I cleaned it all up, put a new carb kit in it and still could not get it to run properly. I disassembled and reassembled the carburator. There was nothing wrong with it. I put the carb on another saw and it worked fine. I couldn't find an air leak anywhere. It wasn't leaning out so I did not know what was making it so hard to set up.

Finally I took the bottom end from a 268G that I knew was good (nice saw with heated handle, missing fuel tank) and put it on the 268 bottom end, the saw now ran like a champ and cuts like a raped ape. But, you don't want to turn the thing off all day because it's such a ????? to start again. What have I got to do to get the thing to run???? I have changed out the atmospheric vent in the tank and I know the carb is good, compression is excellent, fuel filter & line are good.

I would appreciate any feedback you could offer me. Thank you very much,

Just to be on the safe side I would run a vacume test on the saw. It should hold -15lbs for a min. without any change. Also, your carb could not be metering right so you may need to check the clearences for the rocker arm.

Later,
Chris

Stihlman, thanks for the reply, I checked the rocker arm clearances, they're OK. But I don't have a vaccuum gauge. I wonder if there's some way of doing it without one, an old timer's trick or something perhaps??? I sure would like to get the gear to do the job. In my area, for buying tools, my only option would be the chainsaw shop and the Snap On van both of which I seem to remember were pretty expensive. Anyhow, I'll just keep tinkering with it.
