Who uses friction hitches on steel core lanyards (vs. mech devices, like a gibbs)? I use a VT (sometimes a distel) and mini pulley on my rope lanyards, but am looking to get a steel core and was wondering if i should order a mechanical device or if friction hitches work fine. I am aware that gibbs and the like can't be released under load, which i do not like, but if steel cores do not play nice wih friction hiches i guess ill have to get one...

Thanks!

I have an 18' double ended steelcore with a steelcore prussic, works great.

I use a gibbs and a prussic. I actually like the gibbs better.
A prussic works fine on steel core.

Always used prussic till 6 or 8 mo. ago when bought gibbs. Love it/will never go back to prussic. Both have pros and cons...

I use an eye/eye prussick cord tied in a nice short distal with a pulley, my wire core is a 1/2" yale, 10'. Works just fine.
I too am not a fan of mechanical grabs that don't release under load

I've always used a friction hitch with my wire core. Lately there has been more work on evergreen takedowns which require frequent adjustment of the length of flipline and I'm looking for a better option.

I wonder if the Petzl Grillon would work on a wire core flipline?

I use ropewalker currently. I have a gibbs that I use now in rigging. The ropewalker was a larger eye for a carabiner to rotate in...just my comfort

Grillion will NOT work on a steel core flipline. I have one steel core flip I use for pines ONLY as it is quite gummed up and friction hitch (prussik) does not slide for crap. When I hit 6 inch wood or so, I just lean in and take another wrap around the stem. Helps with the side to side stability some too since footing stance is quite narrow near top of the stem.

Thanks, I suspected it wouldn't, but don't have one and so didn't know.

The last few pines I took down, I brought an extra prussic with ropesnap to use on the double ended wire core. When the one prussic already on the wire core became hard to adjust b/c of the sap, I put the extra one into action. Worked good.

Correction to post #13

Question was if Grillon would work on steelcore flipline. Grillion is actually name given to rope lanyard with wear resistant sleeve and a Grigri as a friction device. More correct answer would be, the Grigri will not work with steel core flipline.

flipline

I found that a micro cender works great on a wire core flipline, you free up your other hand when you use it that way!!!

Actually, the adjuster on the grillion is not a stock gri gri. the release handle is not present (its more of a nub to push down on) and it keeps a grip on the rope without weight on it. the gri gri will slide either direcion on the rope unless it is quickly weighted (which obviously could be quite hazardous on a lanyard).

Btw, got a 1/2" steel core from sherrill, works great with a micro pulley and VT so far.

Thanks!
