Does any one have experience with this model? Fella in the local classifieds placed an ad for a FS 120 for $160. I can't find any current data on stihl's website about this model but I'm betting that it would fall in between the 110 and 130. This would be a nice step up from our FS45!

A huge up from the 45 in terms of power and weight. The 120 is, I think, a 36cc trimmer and its a powerfull thing to say the least. It would not pass emissions in Calif so they up the cc's on it to 40 and called it the FS250, same trimmer with more cc's that allowed it to pass emissions out in Calif. The 120 is a great machine but remember it has some age on it by now. 160.00 is a good price providing its not completely wore out. Look it over good before you buy and if in good shape thats a good buy. Very little that big boy won't cut...

Thanks for the info Thall. I'll take my compression tester with me when I do the test drive. I'm figuring that a trimmer should be on par with a chainsaw as far as compression?

Well not quite. Trimmers tend to run alittle less than saws. If she's hitting over a 100 it will run, if she's hitting 120-130 she's cooking just fine. The main thing is to make sure the gear head is good on it. That gear head is about 117.00 so make sure its free and spins the head when running....

Thall, wasn't it the FS200 that had that fate and thus replaced buy the 250? the 200 was also 36cc's and with the same rated output as the 250. Correct me if i'm wrong.

Yah those gearheads are an arm and a leg! I'm finding it's cheaper to sell a customer the FS AC kit for the KM units when they need a new gearhead cause you just discard the shaft and get the gearhead and bumphead for less than the gearhead by itself.

You may well be right there Cam, it was one of the two. Its been awhile since I've used my memory on either of those models. Both are work horses for sure, man they put out some rpms and power..

I was just given a FS250R by my sister in law who moved out of the hills. It is not even broken in, a couple of tanks of mix. (cost $468!)
I will use it in trimmer mode around the house (total overkill), but would like to set it up as a clearing saw with bike handle and better harness for when my little mountain plot gets overgrown:rock:

The FS250 is a beast for sure. I always get back replies from first buyers of those. The usual reply is wow, that thing is awesome................

also do a compression test after you have wammed it up good

Wow, that is definately at the top of the list. Thanks a bunch.

That will give you an idea of the true piston/ ring/ cyl condition,,,,,

Wait a minute,,,Is this a saw forum or are we weed whackin????????? :monkey: :monkey: :monkey:

Nice of them to finally "allow" it, after telling us for years it wasn't allowed as the 250 was "too powerful" for the gearbox.. Oh well..

It was being done so much here that I think they finally got tired of the dealers calling them about making one.
