My apologies if this has been previously hashed out. I couldn't find the info I was looking for from prior posts.

I'm about ready to put my JD65EV back together again and am curious as to what you folks use (if any) for gasket sealants? I have replacement gaskets and plan on using some sort of sealant as well (unless you advise not to).

Should I use a "rigid" type to join the crankcase and for the cylinder-crankcase fit? If so, do you have any product recommendations?

How about the others (carb, muffler etc.)? Would I benefit from a flexible sealant?

thanks!

I don't use any sealant on a gasket. During assembly the sealant acts as a lubricant and can allow the gasket to walk out of position, especally true on crankcase half and cylinder gaskets where there can be relatively long distances of thin gasket with little support. Also, the sealant can get places you don't want it to be. Generally if the factory intalled a gasket dry, so will I.

Spray tac

Thats what I use on crankcase gaskets, cylinder base gaskets, carb gaskets, etc.. It isnt really a sealant as in the form of silicone, but it adds in the bonding process, and also eases assembly as the gasket is not wriggling all around.

On other engines other than chainsaws, that have very large front covers, or pans, this stuff is great because it keeps everything aligned.

Its made by Permatex, comes in a half sized aesol can, blue can, white top. Napa carries it for sure. It is reddish in color when applied, and sticky as hell.

I think it does fill in minor scratches in aluminum, especially if you are using cellulose based materials with no swell ratio, and little compressability.

I would not use silicone sealants anywhere on a 2 stroke engine, too much chance of it getting in a bearing, no filters, etc.

Sealants are great, in the right places!

Just my .02$

I use a little Spray Tack on the base gasket to keep it from jockeying around if the con rod block should slide across it. Other than that, I don`t think there is room enough for gasket cement on saws, except of course those saws that use 3 Bond instead of a gasket.

I use permatex ultra copper aerosal gasket dope. The stuff is very thin and does a good job of assuring the gasket seals properly and that the gasket doesnt move around during assembly. It works really good on steel gaskets as found on Bike cylinders.
