I am excited about my just purchased 1996 F800 single axle Grapple truck. It has the 16 foot dumping body on it about 4 feet high. I am planning on using it as a chip truck and a grapple truck at the end of the job for butt logs and bigger than 6 inch limbs. I need to build some kind of a tailgate on it to keep chips and debris in. How should I do this. I was looking at a Rolloff container door and thinking of copying it but this will make me unhoom the chipper to dump because the gate will hit. I am sure someone has a better way. Also I think i need some kind of a tarp system to keep DOT happy. Any thoughts appreciated..

What about a barn door style opening? Split the difference of one solid door. I don't know any way of dumping the truck without unhooking the chipper. Good luck with your new purchase.

The barn-doors would be great, but instead of solid steel (weight issues ) go with DIAMOND MESH over retangular tubing. This would solve chip & smaller trash issues on long trips. Maybe doors w/ flatbar lock, easily done, safe & readily repairable. The DIAMOND MESH is available in all thicknesses & easily cut & welded. Heavy hinges can be purchased ready-made. Too much time on my hands!!!!!

Forgot the tarp issue: use some inexpensive hasps (out of hasp & hinge locks for pad-locks ) welded to the box & bungi-straps. On the higher end , hydraulic tarp cover, with cylinders, pins, roll-up bar. Either way, you would solve blowing trash issues, Good Luck.

You might ask DOT about the tarp requirements. I have never seen one on a grapple type truck that had the boom stowed in the body. If your boom folds behind the cab that is different.

The gate could be fab'd out of about anything. Weight shouldn't be an issue, if you have a good hinge/pivot system. And you have to decide what you want to spend. Copper is high right now, which drives the cost of sheet steel.

If you have any amount of farming country near you (i.e: Grains), you could probably find a used tarping system from a grain truck.

If you post some pictures, we would have a better understanding of your rig, and what exactly you have to work with.

:)

wont the chips tear up the tarp? i did that once and used one of those really heavy tarps that trucks use over loads and it made holes in it. i guess you'd have to aim the chute real low.

Black material used on dump trucks

I think it's used as shade material to. I don't know whether chips will tear it up? This is what I see on dump trucks. I was thinking Gerasimek had a tarping system of some kind on his truck. I couldn't afford his truck but maybe I could afford his tarp....

On this first (Very rough example), you could make a cab-over rack, and keep the boom forward of the cab. You'd have to measure it out to see if it would work. With the boom forward the cab, loading and unloading wouldn't entail you moving the boom all the time.

In the 2nd pic, you can see the beat up 'chute' or bed extension. I would cut that poor haggard thing clean off, and give yourself a good base to mount your gate. And as far as the tarp, it looks like a grain truck system would work just fine (Whether you found a used setup, or bought new).

Just my 2 C.

Forward.....I'll go check it

That's an idea, I'll measure and see if that'd work to go forward Is so life is simple...One more thing...does anyone know on a hitch for my chipper can I just weld to the frame of the dump for a receiver hitch support. I hate to use the frame because it's 3 feet in there and If I stick out the frame far enough and low enough to weld to I feel there would be times it's drag because it's so far behind the back axle.

Good idea but a bit ....well ugly.

Putting the boom forward may happen but I want to try to figure out another option first. Old chipmonk Are you talking about the actual barn door hinges they sell kind of triangle shaped on both ends about 20 bucks a piece. I was thinking they needed to be heavier but with the 2 doors instead of 1 and the mesh instead of plate it would be lighter.

If you stow the grapple in the box forget the tarp. Knuckle-boom behind cab> O.K. w/ tarp. Use one-eigth in. rectangular tubing/ double doors & med. weight steel diamond screen. Hinges you could make . Double wall pipe & some round bar scraps. Good luck. Call again if you have problems.

Hey Garfield...just to follow up on this post. How do you like the grapple truck? Any problems? Did you find out what type of grapple it is? There is one for sale like yours near me but it is a 1991 F800 and appears to be the same type of grapple. Thinking of looking at it to buy. Anything special I should look for when looking at the truck and grapple! Thanks! Oly

Thanks, Just had a little one so I haven't worked on it as much as I intended. Definitely look at the truck frame under the grapple for breaks. You may have to power wash it with a hotsy to do a good inspection. My rotator leaks oil I did not know this when I bought it. I have not used the truck yet....at this point it is still a project. Good luck to you.
