somehow today I got a massive gob of pitch from a pine on my new favorite lanyard. pitch, bark, the whole shebang and in quantity. before I just go at it with soap and water, wanted to konw if anyone had any recommendations that work for them, and more importtantly, if there is anything i SHOULDNT do that might compromise the strength of the rope. I'm sure everyone has to deal with this, i just don't want to do anything stupid with saftey gear.

I'll tell you my secret ( well it's not anymore). I make a cleaner for paint, tar, grease and other nasty stuff..O.k..Here is what I do..
Half a cup of dry cornmeal...Add enough thin cooking oil ( vegetable oil works for me) cover the meal with plenty of oil..make it soppy wet.. Add a squirt of Liquid Dish soap mix it well..add enough extra corn meal ( if needed) to make a paste and coat it ( what ever needs cleaning) on it, and work it in..Wipe it off with a cloth..Repeat and repeat until IT looks clean except for cooking oil..When I finally get it (everything) clean I may want to put more of the mix on it until the color on IT is light oil colored like the mix then I rinse with soapy water..Eventually fresh water.. IF you do try this,,,Eventually there will be a thin layer of clear ( or almost clear) oil on the rope your hands your wife's shoes, you mother in law's cat, or what ever you tried to clean with this stuff..,, I use warm water and soap to remove the oil and bingo,, I'm done. For me this stuff makes the best hand cleaner...Now IF this does not work for you..Remember,, I'm not telling you to do it.. I'm telling you HOW I would do it..So if you mess something up talk to Jesus about it. Like the Preacher said confess your sins,,not mine and don't fault me. Smile...Good luck

We used to clean pine pitch off of hands using mayo packets from a fast food joint at lunchtime. It works amazingly well.

I wouldn't be surprised if it cleaned up your lanyard.

Pinesol sounds good, too. Maybe better.

I bet Murphy's Oil Soap would do a good job.

I figured it wasn't a big deal, but with safety gear I like to be sure. And sometimes there are unexpected issues with simple solutions, like washing all your carbs in the dishwasher
