If only we could convince the people who force their trees to go topless to make them go bottomless at the same time. They could just wink out of existence and be spared the pain of a deformed and crippled existence!

Euthanise topped trees!:(

was your goal to try and remove that tree or did the client want some restoration attempt. man i hate topped trees. glad you had a bucket. tying in to those clustered uprights can be sketchy.

I don't think that KC has a bucket but he has mastered autolevitation to the point that he only ties into the tree for security in the event of a break in his concentration.;)

No bucket, tie to only a vertical column or 2, and with safety catches below for catch if any smaller branches used for dogging rope to a specific hieght on vertical column fails. Vertical for non leveraged, then observe distance to parent connection i think. Distance and angle componenets rated, some positions become inherently safer than others.

Tree is in lower rent district, the only reason they were paying to get limbs off of roof, is branches were laying flat on roof for years, and time to repair roof!!

Here is pic i took a month or so ago; about some topping/bucking to some trees i was familiar with somewhat at a heavily traveled intersection for residential area here. My purpose was/is to track these trees (maybe even see which one gives up first!).

In all honesty, they were all in decline anyway, so the results a lil'tainted perhaps; but chose it to make point; and will prolly, usually leave that part out; for i don't expect them to do well....so as to serve education etc.

my local council actualy pays contractors to carry out work like that ..and the head of the council tree departmant is supposed to be a qualified arborist ..i will be posting picture if the work next week ..this type of work makes me so dam angry:angry:

Topping is a very common practice here as well. Some people's idea of a good job is all branches cut to a uniform level with no leaves remaining on the tree. I was limb walking on a previously topped tree on Monday to shorten up a branch and the whole branch broke off just as I was reaching down to make a cut with my Zubat. The sudden drop caused me to hit my free hand with the Zubat resulting in several cuts on my fingers. It was a good thing the vertical limb I was tied into held, otherwise I might not be here writing this. I think I will need to start charging double my standard rate to work on topped trees.

topping

i hate seeing sticks where everything has been emoved to one solitary stick, maybe a few pegs....i really wish the tree would die and they might then phone someone who knows what they are talking about to come and explain why the tree died and remove the stick...

does that make sense. or is it a bit twisted....

oh and im applying for a job with the council (ive been told an apprentice job is coming up) and ive just had a pay rise......an extra 10 beers a week i can get now

Yeah but you got to think the folks that do this stuff are smart... Or so says my partner Dave...

First they sucker you into paying for something you should have done... Then they get you again a few times for 'maintenance' (re top) then 5- 10 years down the road they tell you that the tree really needs to come down becuse it's just disobediant and won't stay where they tell it too!

Same tree 4 times over the price!

I think I'm going start topping!

When half of your customers are seniors and they know what a tree needs, what other choice do you have?

I have also found that many people over age 65 are tree experts that are not going to be swayed from their opinion.
This is what I've learned, Topping is for when:
- The tree is just getting to big
- You really want it to "bush out"
- The tree is losing its shape
- Trees over and beside the house must be kept low
