Today I learned of a new invasive pest here in So. Calif The gold spotted oak borer. Its a killer of coastal and valley oak inparticular. We may be removing a massive oak dieing from the effects of this beetle.
It was only recently identified and is already doing a lot of damage from San Diego all the way to Ventura Co. Its from central America and southern Mexico.
Any one moving fire wood from dead oaks should follow the same outline as they would any beetle infested tree. So far chemical sprays or systematic injections haven't been effective, but there is anecdotal rumors that compost tea may help. Maybe maybe not.
I just wanted to share this with my So. Cal. fellow arborist who might be interested as I was. Thanks Beast.
