mY DEALER SAYS i CAN GET 2 ms 390'S FOR 800. iS THAT A GOOD DEAL.

Also inen't their a 50 somthing cc sthil saw that has almost all the same specs as the 390 but is a bit lighter and cheaper?

That is great deal for 2 390's! They retail for around 500 here.

The 390 is kinda alone in it's specs: ~64cc and 4.4hp. It has enough power to overcome it's weight. Sorta comparable to a 361. Should cut right with a 361 methinks. It may be hard to work on and too plasticky, but I bet the wood it cuts burns just as well.:chainsaw:

Nieghbor got one, almost new, I sharpened it up good and it cuts, ok, nothing special, you don't need two mediocre saws. Fishhunt is right, get something decent.

I suspect that your earlier plan to buy two saws is still what you're aiming to do, right?

It's a good price on a pair of MS390s. If you're looking to buy two new Stihl saws that can pull a 20" bar with authority, you're doing well with a dealer willing to part with 'em for that price. You will NOT find two MS361s for $800.

Good To Hear

I am glad it is a good deal.... I will probally do that... but the sthil catalog did have one smaller cheaper 50 somthing cc saw that had the same 4.4 hp and could run the same bar length.... I dont remember what one it was though..

Is your dealer trying to get rid of them?

Why the 'good' deal?

Is it a good deal to YOU, for your cutting needs?

If you could sell them for $450 each, I'd put the extra $100 bucks towards a better saw, it would get you into the 361 just fine.

hey are you shoping at leo's? they may sell you my 390 i traded in last fall for my 650. i used the 390 on 2 cords and just did not feel like an upgrade to my 346xp. Which they said was. anyway good saws but i would worry if you plan on using them in a every day business.

well at least the snow is going away

Wait it's not it will be back in two days!!!!

Got to love VT

I don't know that I'd even buy a 390 for a "crew" saw. Those plastic crankcases don't take being thrown around very well. See if you can get two MS-260 non-pro saws with 18" bars for the same price.

There is no such creature.

Computer is right. The 361 has the same hp, but is more money...it is smaller cc-wise as well. And the 361 will outcut a 390.

And don't get hung up on Stihl's bar recommendations. They're ballpark at best.

Why

HOW CAN THE SMALLER SAW OUT CUUT THE 390..... AND WHY IS THE 361... A SMALLER SAW COST MORE MONEY?... i THINK IT IS CHEAPER AT MY DEALER?

becouse its a professional saw vs. consumer grade saw...

Blis is right, they aren't really comparable, the 361 is better in every respect.

Imo, the 390 isn't a good deal, regardless of price..........:greenchainsaw:

.....it is an outdated design, made as cheaply as possible.

It's the same way you can design a four cylinder to pump out 300 or more hp, but have a big old V-8 putting out 175. It's design and technology. It's the same reason they're both the same hp on paper, but the 361 is still smaller. Not only that, but it's horses have more ooomph than the 390's, but that's another post in another thread.

The 361 costs more because it's a better saw in absolutely every respect- anti-vibe, weight, case construction, filtration, power band. Do a search on here for "homeowner professional" and you'll get some reading. The 361 can only cost less if it's used or on consignment. That saw is $100+ or more.

Not sure if the same in the states but in Canada Stihl was running a special with the 290 for $399 cnd and the 390 for $499 cnd.

rate today = 499 * .8680 = $433 us.

I would say it is a reasonable deal price wise.

Only you can decide if they are the right saws for you given the advice you have been given. I have never used one.

"mY DEALER SAYS i CAN GET 2 ms 390'S FOR 800. iS THAT A GOOD DEAL."

short answer is yes, if you need 2 390's.

nothing is a good deal if we dont need it. well maybe include want it. i once bought a 1" impact wrench for $200 legit. used it maybe once a year. so not such a good deal.

as for the saw, i have had an 039 for bout 8 years. it has been abused more than any saw i have. its my "dirty job" saw but gets regular maintenance. its on its second piston. muff modd and widened ports. wil start on third pull anytime. first sometimes. like the eveready bunny and american express, takes a licking and keeps on ticking and wouldnt leave home w/o it!!!

...like the eveready bunny

HA! Shows what you know.....it's the Energizer Bunny! :hmm3grin2orange:

Really though, you made a good point about this series of saw. They are drop dead dependable. When compared to a pro saw, they can fall short, but for a homeower, and a dirty jobs saw, they do what they're asked to do time and again.
