Have you ported the muffler on that saw yet? If not it will bring new life to that saw. Also it is a very easy muffler to port.

When you pull the muffler off there is an indented square. Remove all the material in the square. Then connect the two exhaust holes below that. On the front piece you removed remove the section where it tapers down to the exhaust port. Put it all back together and richen up the carb. That will make her run better.

When I do this mod on saws I recomend 32:1 oil and 92-94 Octaine fuel (No I don't want to debate this for those of you who like too). This is what I recomend for this mod. As for an oil just use a good oil.
If you can track one down I believe Stihl still makes a nylon filter for this saw. Just gives it a bit more air. But I would wait till you current one is shot. Oh and you can clean the current one with Brake Cleaner spraying the filter from the inside and let setting for @ 10 min. Then blow off lightly with an air hose.
Happy cutting and I am glade you are happy.

the 440 has an muffler cover you can buy that has an extra port in it. It will make a big difference in how the saw runs. Like the work did on the other saw. Let us know how the saws make out.

Woodie003,
Speaking from experience, try what stihlman036 suggested for your 029 muffler. I followed his instructions last year on my 029 muffler & carb adjustment. It really made a big difference in the way the saw ran. Since then I have modded my 141, 340 & the 357xp is up next.

nj, "that mod" that stihlman036 spoke of in this thread is specific to an 029.
A 036 job is different and I don't know how to do that one, I am sure someone here can guide you through that procedure for an 036. Yes, muffler mods work on Huskys also.
Some respond better than others though. I am no expert just an obsessive compulsive hobbiest. This site does that to people. :p

In terms of the 036 I can only suggest you get lucky like I did and obtain a muffler from an older version.  Whereas the latest had a single outlet the size of a pea, the older one has a hole about 5/8" and in front of it, a generous formed slot.

I will be doing that mod to my 036 this weekend...Does that muffler mod work on huskys too?
I see on your signature you have a 365 husky, do that too- tou will crap your pants. Pay special attention to port matching the muffler, gaskets and heat shield to the exhaust port. I used a set of extended reach pliers to carefully flare the inside of the exhaust exit. Also drilled three 3/16" holes behind the bump strip on the front of the muffler. Make sure to give her more fuel. Mine will pull an 8 tooth 3/8ths now on a 20 inch. Stihlman can tell you how this saw runs he's had his hands on it, it almost got him to switch over to the dark side (Husky) LOL.
