Tony, one of the resident shop owners sez:
Has everyone forgotten about their local small time dealers who invest their capital in stocking this stuff in hopes you won't forget them?

Yeah, Tony, but what about the convenience of ordering the stuff you need in the middle of the night, in your skivvies, if you want, and the joy of waiting for UPS to finally getting around to you?

In the interest of fairness, I gave my local appliance store a chance the day before new years eve...the dryer had died, needed a couple of electronic parts and a switch. I dutifully looked up the parts on 3 websites, was quoted between $70 and $80 for parts (without rush delivery!), plus add about 25% for S&H (all parts together weigh less than a pound?!). Just for giggles, I phoned local appliance guy; he had what I wanted, and had the nerve to ask for $61, and had it laying on the counter with my name on it when I stopped in.

He did offer to charge me more, so I wouldn't feel cheated, but I said I would "take the price he had rung up, thanks".

I mean no harm to any and all who sell on the net, but sometimes the local guy is able to do better, and it usually only takes a phone call to find out. I might still be waiting for the appliance stuff if I had ordered it without paying extra for express handling.

yep, seems like shipping charges usually even out the savings from ordering parts. If you only need one then the local guy is best!

If i remember right jeff told me that he had lots of bars there, had a bunch of long ones too i think up to 42"

eyolf,

There's another aspect of the Internet/Mail_order purchases which I rarely see mentioned.  I think that most people think that such purchases are made tax-free, with the attendant savings of a few bucks.  In a lot of places that is strictly not the case, and by not providing their local governing authority the tax money, the buyers are actually breaking the law.  I know this does not apply to everyone everwhere, but one example of what I'm talking about can be found at http://www.michigan.gov/treasury/0,1607,7-121-2143_2153-5931--,00.html  I've heard tales of large corporations saving big bucks on office supplies only to get busted for tens of thousands of dollars in taxes.

Newfie,

I have it in a Tilton brand but not in Oregon. It would be about $40. Also have it in Jonsered marked version. I believe they are Windsors.

I was not soliciting sales from the web, I was just asking if you had tried your local dealer.

The shipping would probably make me uncompetitive.

I will be shifting my stock to Oregon over the next few months. I get some Oregon stuff in now with the Solo product.

I was curious, did your 288 come with .050 chain? The Jonsereds come standard with .058.

Its too bad we have to have these three gauges and can't have standardized by now, as I think it makes no practical difference.

I will be d mned if I am going to pay the state a single dime "use tax" on mail order purchases. I never have, never will, nobody I know has, and nobody I know has gotten caught. In my book this is all the more reason to mail order-keep money out of the governments gready hands. BTW I support my local guy. Mostly because I like him.
