It is hard to tell from the pics but it is either an 051 or an 075. If it has a manual assist oiler it is an 075. If it only has an automatic oiler it could be either. The manual assist oiler is a black button a couple inched to the right of the oil cap as you are operating the saw. If it does not have a manual assist button it will have a hex head plug where the button would be.

If there is no manual oiler the only way to tell is if it has head bolts at the base of the cylinder(051) or full length head studs with nuts at the top of the cylinder (075). Both saws have decomp valves, the same carb, etc etc.

Both saws make good milling saws.

thanks to all for the help that will get me started.

thanks again guys. well its a 75 av then.. and it should push a 32 inch blade nicely. it looks looks like its a runner. Theres no spark right now but it has good compression. Any thoughts as to where to buy ign parts?

I have at least two different types of ignitions for the 075 so you'll need to find some numbers. If you have to buy new I'd get the ignition for the 076 that doesn't have anything under the flywheel.

I'd check the connections first. The wire get brittle and crack and ground out. stihl dealers usually have the ignition wire in stock.

I try the swap meet over in the chainsaw section, ebay, chainsawr, bailey's, then the stihl dealer.

That is an early 075 and the triger plate for an 076 will not work. if your triger plate is bad there is a universal electronic replacement that mounts anywhere. The under side of the handle or under the air filter box works nicely. There are two different triger plates and two different coils(three if you count the one from the ts 760) the two different 075 coils will interchange unlike the triger plates.

The triger plate and coil from the 051 and 075 are interchangable and there is an early and late version for both the 051 and 075.

I have a 42" bar on my 075 and I think you will find that is a common size around here for that saw.

Thanks. That's nice to know. I have moved the ignition from a 075 to an 076. I thought it would work the other way around.

There is very litle difference betrween the 075 and 076, however the 075 had two distinct model variations that I know of. the 076 was introduced in 1980 and its parts are only interchangable with the late model 075. I supose there are a lot of parts that interchange such as carbs and muffler sheilds an handles, oilers.... One of the big changes between the early and late versions of the 051/075 is the flywheel, starter, trigger plate, coil, and flywheel side crank bearing. The cylinder gasket is also differet and there are minor changes to the case where the cylinder mates up. I didn't check on compatability of the early cylinder to late case but I did find that a late model ts760 cylinder dies not fit on an early case. I suspect that the early cylinder will work on the later case based on the changes but you should be aware that there is a difference when looking to make swaps.

There are two different phenolic intake blocks for the 075/076 and I don't know how those fit in. I suspect the larger size was only on the ts 760 and 076, not sure if there was a 'super' designation or not.

Thanks again.

My 076 manifold is the same as the others I have. the only difference is the spacer that's on top of it.
