I have a regular size Alaskan CSM and was thinking about converting to the small Alaskan CSM for smaller white pines I have (16-18). Just for easier use, I don't need perfect cut, just want to get this things cut up before the power post beetles finish them up. I would convert it back to regular Alaskan CSM when done.

Thanks,

And.................What do you knowledgeable guy think? Is it doable? Or do I have to do some thing besides add a sheet of Plexiglas to it? Is the attachment part/point to the bar different? Or do have to modify that area?

I haven't used the small Alaskan myself. Not sure why you would want to if you already have a 36" Alaskan ? ?

Agree 100%, I cut 18" stuff with the 42" bar on a 54" alaskan - no big deal.

The small log mill is for small bars. For bars longer than about 20" it runs a risk of splaying out and producing an uneven thickness board, why risk it, just use the full kahoona.

I understand your logic (I think). Use the appropriate tool for the job? BUT,in the CSM world having more bars and chains and mills means duplication and more money. I thought I would use my 395 for big stuff and the 385 for smaller stuff. Didn't happen. I use the 395 with a 42 inch bar on my GB mill with 36 inch rails. Any thing under 34 inches gets cut with that setup. anything bigger and I bring out the 60 inch double ender and use both saws on that with the 66 inch rails on the same mill. Even that is a pain in the butt to swap everything around. Keep it simple and as inexpensive as possible is my advice. Just my 2 cents.

If you had a smaller saw I'd pull the trigger on a small log mill. Then you'd have a mill easier to use on little logs if you have a need for that. Don't believe I'd modify my alaskan though for a few little logs. Yeah those powder post beetles are a pita. Don't forget to edge your boards too or may still get the little fellers.
