I was thinking about getting a 16k grapple log trailer or making one. Anyone use one? Whats the pro and cons?

A buddy of mine used to build those, but 16k is kinda light I think? I like the idea, but it doesn't work out financially for my situation(in the woods).

I was just trying to get away from having another truck. 16k would give you about the same capacity as a single axle grapple truck

yea, trailer might be less expense, guess it all depends on your use. Is there a brand you are looking at and did you price it? Just curious. Wish I had the skills to build one myself, would be awfull handy at times.

Baileys sells one but your close to 30k. I think I can build one for alot cheaper. I see these older knuckle booms for sale for like $2500. I can get a new gooseneck traiker for under 10k. There is two truck shops within 2 hours from me that make the knuckle boom chip trucks

yea, my friend was involved with bluox initially, I ran the big unit and the loader was impressive. It's getting tough around here with all the dot and heavy truck/trailer regs.

Last I checked the website was there, but if it is still operating it is limping I think? The partner with loans to bluox filed papers and collected items worth taking a wile back. I ended up buying the bluox newholland compact tractor from him:)

I looked at WI craigslist last night and found about 6 smallish log loader units for sale. I have been running a metavic in the woods for years, decent machine for my work.

You have me thinking I should learn to weld.

a grapple trailer is so unrealistic, as is a single axle grapple truck. thats a low blow, jk . the reality of a grapple trailer is you need a CDL truck to pull it anyways. so buy a tandem axle log truck or a grapple truck and be done with it.

That is kinda the conclusion I came to for my own work, which is in the woods. Tractor trailer hauls all my wood. I can see however that for some applications the smaller equipment would work well. Not for me, but for some. I like hearing what other people are doing and what works for them even if it doesn't apply to me. It might apply to me if more mills close and I change what I am doing.

I dont need to carry enough weight on most jobs to need a tandem axle grapple. Most times I bring the wood home in the back of my forestry bucket truck or on my 18' 10k trailer.
