Spent a few days doing post-Frances tree repair. On several oaks with busted crowns the options were:
1. Remove whole tree because damage was severe (>50% crown loss).
2. Save tree by removing broken crown in small pieces so lower branches are not damaged. My previous SOP. Takes 3-4 hrs and much strain; maybe expense will be too great for the decision-maker, so option 1. is sometimes preferred, especially by those who are looking at many tree$.
3. Save tree by winching sections of broken crown away with GRCS. Takes 1-2 (relatively) relaxed hours, easier to sell and do preservation.
Dan TreeCo's GRCS winch made tree-saving work fun and affordable.
Climbed more with VT and liked that too.
