All the talk about chasing Isabel has got me to thinking about how it would be an interesting experience to help out in that sort of situation, a kinda busmans holiday.

Would any companies out there take a guy on to help them out in emergency situations such as isabel? Even just as a groundie.

The only problems I can see is that

1) I cant bring any saws on the plane (all climbing gear would be fine)

2) No work visa (would have to be cash and be enough to cover airfare)

We could get a climbing mercenary exchange going! I know the UK got hit pretty hard a few years back and the firemen did more damage than the storm with felling trees.

Any Ideas?

I have hauled my gear overseas many times. Never taken a chain saw. This is a problem. Have rented/borrowed saws upon arrival. That can suck because you find yourself 40ft up a tree where you would want an 020T but instead, you have an 038, 044, or an electric saw

Money. Money can be good, but by the time you pay for airfare, a place to stay, and food - there is nothing left. Still cool to go to other countries and kill their trees!! Many times I have gone to Germany to stay for a few weeks, and covered my airfare with just 2 days work. I don't pay for lodging though:)

Airfare is so high that you have to travel in off season - Sept - April.

Things are more complicated now. Some countries require you to have a cert to climb or use a chainsaw.

My point with all this is that it has to be a labor of love. You have to do it because you like working with trees and you like traveling ---- NOT because you like money.

I dont scare easily, I need at least 2 grand to cover my airfare, Ive done rigging, crane and cleanup work before. I have NZQA chainsaw certs, im just getting a fast passport done after finding mine expired a little while ago!!!!

At this moment Im listening to elevator music while on hold with the passport office, grrrrrrr

sounds like Im stuck in nz for the next 3 to 4 days so far, still keen?

Timber, let me know when you'll be incountry. I might have a diplomatic carry-on that'll make your return less taxing.
