Is that what it is ? a smoker ?

LOL

The Softwater place has had a sign out front to come in and see their big green egg. Even on the radio. Never a word as to what it was, just come see it.

Heh ! a smoker, who would have figured. I always thought it was something to do with Easter since their ad campaign started in the Spring a while back.

Like to hear what anyone has to say about it too.

My uncle bought one and they are pretty versatile little cookers. They are made out of ceramic and sealed really well so they can cook for a LOOONG time and keep consistant temps with a small amount of charcoal or build a super hot fire to sear steaks.
On the downside: they are expensive relative to the cooking capacity, the lid or base will crack or shatter if dropped and it's not very mobile.

They run about $500-$1500(depending on size) in stores or buy them online a lot cheaper but you won't get a warranty:

The very best smoker/grill ever invented! I've had/used one for over 20 yrs. Yes, they are expensive (but can last a lifetime with proper care), and a bit fragile (the latest versions are much heavier and less fragile than mine). They can be regulated down to completly air-tight like a good woodstove so temp control is very precise. They can be used just like an oven, or can be "opened up" to sear steaks just awesome. Make sure to use natural lump charcoal - easier to light and much less ash to deal with. One good load of lump charcoal (about a one-gallon pail full) will burn for many, many hours under a Boston butt! MMMM!

Just ate some babybacks off mine thirty minutes ago. Best gift my wife ever bought me. You can sear steaks @ 700 or smoke a brisket for 10 hrs @ 225.

My good friend is a dealer here in Missouri. According to him the ceramic has a lifetime warranty. The seal on the lid, and the metal band that holds the egg together is the only thing not covered. You should be able to buy one for $700.00 (Large) I built my own stand for $150.00. :givebeer:

They do a great job but are way too expensive in my book. I saw an episode on the Food Network and Alton Brown designed a smoking system using a large terra cotta pot with base that looks intriguing to try.

YEP, from what i've heard the big green egg is patterned after the original bbq pit that was merely a clay pot! The price is the only drawback for me, not much return on that purchase. My gas and charcoal smokers will just keep on cookin. Thanks for the info to all.
