Green Furry Stuff on Trunk

Hey guys, long time no talk!

I have a question from a client and I figured that I'd just cut and paste it here to see what you think.

I have a Chinese Maple in my backyard and it seems healthy enough, but on the trunk and limbs, there is a green, furry like coating that I can peel off. Is this good or bad? There is also some on my Crepe Myrtles.

It may just be some kind of moss, I don't know. I haven't seen it yet but I plan to in the next couple of days. I'll check to make sure that:

* Root flare is exposed
* There is not too much compaction in the root zone
* Roots haven't been cut or damaged in any way
* A decent amount of mulch is under the majority of the driplines

Anything else I should check?

sounds like moss or lichen, would have to see a picture. alot of these things grow on trees and do not seem to hinder the tree in any way. keep us posted on what you find ok? jpm
