I had my first opportunity to grind one of the biggest cabbage palms I have seen. It was about 3 feet across. It was like grinding a 55 gallon drum of cotton balls. lol

Sorry, I didn't get any pics. It was basically make a pass or two and then rake the cotton balls out. lol

Yeah, I'll bet, I can just imagine!!!
Never had to grind palm stumps, usually get left to rot out, takes a long time though, saw one yesterday I did two years ago...still firm!

Coconut palm stumps are easy to grind and the grindings are real tiny. That would be my favorite stump to grind. Easier that almost anything else.

Palm stumps can be a p.i.t.a.
The fibers in them tend to cut the ones going horizontally, and leave the ones going vertical intact, like a bunch or twine string.

If you specify grinding them 10 in below, you end up having to grind 15 inches deep, wich is mostly sand mixed with fibers.
Dulls the teeth, and rough on the bearings too.

I think pineapples are the worst.

You are right. Too big of a bite and it would try to choke my little 25HP down from all that crap binding everything up. I did a 14 incher last night in about 5 minutes and didn't have any problems with it.

Yep.Vermeer can call it a "stump cutter" all they want. When it comes to most palm stumps,,,,,,It's a GRINDER.

Given 2 stumps of the same size,I'd rather do an Oak stump than a palm.

I've had problems grinding palm stumps too. Mainly the larger phoenix palms of about 3ft diameter or more. The fibres are sometimes so long they wrap around the cutting disk and stall the grinder. Does anyone know a better way than stump grinding to deal with them? Do the big grinders have the same issues?

For those, we use a Vermeer 672 tow behind. Eats it up like nothing.
Jeff :)
