looks a lot like a Distel, Rich. I can't see the extra loop at the bottom well enough to see where it's going though.

Sailor's Gripping Hitch- i liked it better in flat than round cord; especially as far as self tending; but liked the similair Icicle better.

Like the other Friction Hitches, it has a coil(4 turns) on top; preceded by a half hitch (like the Icicle, half hitch is around it's own tail and not around host LifeLine like Distel, Schwab, Knut, TK etc.) to limit the loading to the coil, to keep the coil in 'friendly' loading range/powerband; so it won't sieze i think.

i think it is easier to make/see; if you make your coil, then an extra turn around host LifeLine with tail from bottom of coil; pinched away from LifeLine. Then take the tail from top turn and Half Hitch it around the tail from bottom of coil; as it goes to LifeLine and comes off LifeLine. So that, the Half Hitch chokes around both before and after the LifeLine.

Icicle makes similar Half Hitch from bottom of coil, and both tails reeve thru it. Round cord, not seeming to self tend as well in either to me.

TS your posts are hard to understand........especially when I don't have enough coffee in me.

In your opinion how does the "Gripping Hitch" work in comparison to the "knut Hitch"?

i like the Sailor's Gripping Hitch and Icicle better (as a family of alike hitches)than Knut and TK (as a seperate branch family of alike hitches). These 4 hitches restrict loading to top and bottom of 4 turn coil, for easier self tending.

The Distel/Schwab family-set only restrict/buffer loading to the top of coil; bottom of coil gets full loading of that leg from saddle.

One of my projects is to sometime make compairison chart, showing all hitches with top 4 turn coil, and how some type of singular turn (much different mechancics than 4 turn coil) precedes the coil. This reduces the direct loading to the coil, through these preceding turns/hitches. All the same strategy for this, just differently applied; to make the variety of hitches.
