I'm going to be ordering a climbing setup here in a bit and was looking at what other accessories I should get. I'm getting a helmet and gear bags, but I was wondering if I should get a hand saw of some sorts. It seems to me that it might be useful at some point to have a hand saw with me.

What are everyone's thoughts?

Are there any other handy tools/ accessories I should consider with my purchase?

If you are just climbing for fun don't go out of your way and hack a bunch of limbs off but they do come in handy from time to time. You may also want to order a book on pruning so when the time comes to pull out the saw you can make the proper cut and not damage the tree. Stay safe

I'm not looking to hack any trees, but am just curious if it would be handy to have one. It seems like Silky saws are pretty nice but pricey. I see there are some cheaper Corona saws.

Eventuallly I'd like to climb around my Pap's farm and clean up some snags and what not. What would be a good hand saw for that? I'm only looking to buy one and I don't mind spending the money for quality.

Also, are ditty bags pretty handy?

Thanks!

I have a few Silkys and like all of them. My favorite is the Sugoi.

Have had mixed results with Corona saws. There are certainly some good ones out there.

If the saw wasn't paying for itself, I would probably expect to spend around $30ish and around 15 inches total length.

I do think it is well worth having on along when climbing - feels kinda dumb to climb right past a dead branch or a branch rubbing against others oddly...but take flushcut's advice and make sure you know how to prune before you do.

Also i forgot to add id keep a handsaw or knife with you at all times for saftey reasons. never know if you gotta cut yourself loose, and its sure hard to start a chainsaw with one arm broke/pinched against tree and big limb that didnt fall right ya know
