I have a silky zubat handsaw that i've been using for 3 years now. I'm getting tired of it. The problem is the clip that attaches the saw to the belt loop comes undone when climbing in trees with lots lateral brushy limbs. Also if the scabbard gets turned upside down the saw comes out and falls to the ground:bang:

I thinking of getting a new handsaw or modifying the one I have. Any recomendation on a new saw or ways to improve the one I have?

I had the same problem with my Zubat, NC. The buckle eventually broke when it got hung on a branch during a swing. I replaced the whole scabbard with one of those cheapo Buckingham versions. No complaints now.

On further review...I like Mike's answer better. I must admit, I feel a bit stupid now though, duh..."Duct Tape!" lol

For this, I just duct taped the handle. It's been working for over a year now.

seems like a simple fix i'll give it a try. Thanks I certainly don'y want to give up my silky if I don't have too.

I don't know why silky has to put that clip on the scabbard. It seems senseless. If im not using it then I just unhook it from my saddle. I see no need for a clip, its just something else to break. i actually broke the original clip and am now using the clip off a corona scabbard. I think silky should redesign the scabbard but who am I, I just use there handsaws what do I know

If you have a corona handsaw the scabbard will fit a silky zubat nicely. Just make sure you take out the little metal rollers that are inside the corona scabbard or they will dull your blade. I think this might be a reason why corona handsaws don't stay sharp long.

I don't often take a handsaw into the tree with me but if I did would would go with the leg scabbard thingy.
I was up a little beech yesterday with a handsaw, it was a little bit of pain having to use two hands to put the saw back in the holder with it dangling around like that. 3 years of that would put anybody in an institution.
I was trying to be nice to the tree but the HO kept saying "take more, take more" so I whipped out my 20.

you must not use your handsaw a whole lot if it's still sharp after 3 years!

I had a sugoi and a zubat and never could make my mind up which I liked better - the sugoi had a nicer handle, a bit more agressive, but the sugoi was lighter and fit into tight spaces between branches better. In the end somebody solved my problem by stealing my sugoi. I only have the zubat now. Stupidly enough, they have different clips to attach the scabbard! So if you have both saws, and you have the clip attached permanently to your harness (as I do) then you need to change the clip and not just the saw...

The leather scabbards do seem pretty popular, for myself I leave my saw hanging off my harness on a short tether. I find it gets hung up less that way, and gets generally less in the way. One thing I've seen a few guys do is put a self tapping screw through the button/clip that holds the saw in. Seems to work pretty good.

I wish I could say that I am still using the original blade in my silky being that replacements are so dam expensive. I have to change my blade once a year. I hate carrying a chainsaw in the tree if I don't need to plus you cant make good cuts on smaller branches witha chainsaw without skinning up the tree.

Thats a good idea putting a screw through the clip.

Has anybody used the new(ish) ARS handsaw that's I've seen advertised lately, has a latch that holds it in the scabbard? I'd like to try one of those in the tree, see how it holds up to my monkeying around...

I brokedown and bought a new saw an ARS. It aggressive more so than Silky. The scabbard is much better built than silkys. Now as it holding up as long as asilky time will tell. So far im happy with it.

Sherrill has ARS for sale for over 80 bucks I got mine through American Arborist Supply for 50 bucks.

I have the ARS, very nice. I guess there is a little dif between the 2, but after a 100 cuts or so, they both perform the same. Have the ARS on my bucket gear and the Zubat on my saddle

I got rid of my silky scabbard for the same reasons your talking about. It works fine when you first get it but as it wears the saw just falls right out. I really do like the Zubat and the scabbard. I was thinking I may try to put a magnet on it somehow to keep the saw in.

I did however recently buy a samurai handsaw

So far I like it and the price is better than a silky. The scabbard is nice and so far it seems less prone to falling out. I am interested to see how long it is going to last, my last silky zubat lasted a year before I replaced it. I do miss the hook on the end of the zubat though.
