I've been working at the botanical gardens in Clairmont. Normally one of my favorite places to work. This drought is taking its toll on its trees. Because their on a tight budget they only have us come in when some funds available, and then most pressing projects go first. So the 30 or so dead trees have been left to rot. Now they want them out.
Lots of the trees died from the a shotgun borer. This bug turn trees into fragile brittle pieces of wood that'll crumble and shatter if climbed. I've been doing a lot of them hanging from a crane. It's never a dull minute. Yesterday was doing an iron wood tree. It went up for 15 or twenty ft. then shot out 90 degrees for 25 ft. There was a valuable tree under it they didn't want hurt. The ironwood was dead and split up the middle. Not wanting to climb it I put a ladder up on it and was going to zip line the tip pass the tree beneath it. It was so dicey after I got up there I said screw this, I'll fall it and hope for the best. I had the guys pulling it after the face cut was in. I barely started the back cut when in a split second i realiize something wierd was happening. I was tossed sideways with my saw running full throttle. My mind couldn't grasp what was happening, but I knew I didn't want to !and on that saw. The ground had fractured. Im glad I wasn't up there.
