I have a stihl 031 with inconsistent idle. Runs fine wide open but is slow to return to idle and the idle speed varies from running chain to dying. Carb was recently rebuilt and saw ran fine for 2 weeks.

No harm in trying... make sure you inlet screen is clear also.
It's most likely your impulse hose or the impulse connection to the carb. A cheap trick -pull the hose end through to the carb side of the world, then push the carb onto it. Makes a better (but temporary) connection.

check the 4 screws that hold the cylinder to the cases. I just rebuilt an 028 and after running for a few hours these screws came loose and it was sucking in a bit of air. Retightened and everything runs fine now. I'm contemplating putting some red loctite on these buggers.

Don't... just use a torque wrench.... Upgrade to torx screws if you want, but you don't realy need too.

Lakeside, Do you think a new impulse line would most likely solve the problem and how hard is it to change the line? I have a good mechanic but if it isn't a big hassle I would like to do it myself.

It's a stihl what the hell do ya expect. The take it up the ass and so does anyone associated with 'em

You should have two lines to your carb, one from the gas tank the other
is the impulse line, see where it runs and then decide if you can replace it.

I stopped by the stihl shop today and got a impulse tube for 2.45. The guy said it should be the impulse or the seals. So I thought I would just get the impulse and try that first since my impulse doesn't look that good or connects good with the carb. I will check the manifold when I replace the impulse. By the way, does anybody have any tricks to changing the impulse on my 031, the space looks pretty tight.

Thanks for any help.

Take of the tank/recoil assembly.. and use forceps. You can also try just removing the carb mount casting... Usually works.

Ok, I have been able to get the saw to run pretty good now but I still have a few problems. First, the saw occasionally will still have a inconsistent idle (slows down really slow) but it happens at random times. And secondly, the saw is running lean but the high speed is good and doesn't seem be lacking fuel. I took apart the pickup and I cleaned it up so now I'm stumped. I gettin a little fustrated because it ran like brand new when I put a new carb rebuild in it and then took a dump on me.:bang:
