Anyone know of any accredited schools or college programs on the east coast that teach proper felling, climbing, arborist procedures ? Any help would be appreciated.

hi im in the same boat as you, after doing alot of research i applied to Univ. of Mass. they have a small school within the univ. called the Stockbridge school, they have an aborioculture/urban forestry program that teaches everything needed, and also has great internship database with many companies.I beleive you can do a 4 year bachelors degree program, or the two year associates program which i am doing. Also i beleive UCONN has an urban forestry program, as well as SUNY Cobbelskill. Many schools in northern New England also have forestry programs, with minors in aborioculture, but i am not sure if they teach rigging/climbing. Good luck with your search, and if you have any more questions just shoot me a PM.

there is a small college in the PA state system; St. Mary's or something like that. Husband and wife teach tree care with all the climb and cut stuff too. They are both really talented people.

I went to Paul Smith's College in up state NY, I think it has what you are looking for. Climbing, rigging, ID, landscape info, biz classes so you can handle the $ and the employees. A very well rounded AAS degree. Here is the link http://www.paulsmiths.edu/forestry/urban.php I looked at Umass, UNH, Unity in Maine and a few others, kept coming back to PSC. When I was done, I had multiple job options and was able to pick what worked best for me. Of course the job market has changed but they have a ton of connections to help you out. Eight years later after starting a career in firefighting, I now I have my own tree company. I was amazed as I started-up the company how much great information they gave us, and I find my self wishing I took better notes back in the day. Sorry for the long winded response. Oh, PS: They have a great woodsmens team (you might have seen them on the History Channels "The History of the Axe" show. They did a five minute segment on competition axes.)
