 I recently bought a McCulloch Pro Mac 700 and fired it up for a short time just to check it out and it ran good. A couple of weeks later I fired it up again but this time ...heaps of smoke out the exhaust and when I shut it down, heaps of oil out the exhaust. I have just stripped it down and what I saw made me have to use one of my workshop rags for a hanky to mop up the tears. Both the piston and bore are badly scored. The piston is history and I don't know what I can do about the cylinder. As I have begun to look for a cause, the story is coming out. The saw had been sitting for some time before being sold to me . The oil in the cases probably turned to sludge and running it again disturbed some and sent it through the saw. From what I can tell this is a chrome cylinder model. I do not know what to do next to repair it. Can anyone please help me out with advice, sourcing any parts or even some sympathy would help at this moment. I knew this kind of moment (broken saw and trying to find parts)was bound to come when I fell in love with Macs but the hurt is still real. Thankyou very much!

Are you sure the piston and cylinder are really stuffed? They can look pretty bad and still run pretty well.

When you started it the second time, did it run OK? Was the problem cosmetic (ie, smoke, oil) or did something else seem wrong?

Pics of badly scored??

And remember, if it is toast, you're only looking for a piston, maybe a cylinder. It's not that bad.

Heres real sympathy.

Good Luck fixing the ole girl.

Pics of damage.

Thanks for the sympathy, help and eBay link. I had been watching that saw on eBay but if I had paid that price it would cost me that much again just to get it down here unfortunately. It looked like a very nice example.
When I started the 700 for the second time it immediately started to smoke. I didn't have a chance to notice anything unusual in it's running. After having a good look inside I can see what looks to be older brown marks where it has possibly picked up slightly some time ago. This may have been one of the reasons the guy was looking to sell. I hope you are able to make sense of the pics. They are: both sides of the piston( yes, unfortunately it did both sides); looking up the cylinder and looking through both ports.I think I can see small patches where the chrome has flaked off. Thankyou so much for your help and advice, it is much appreciated as I am new to chainsaws, two strokes and aluminium bores and I am relying on this old girl to help keep the family in firewood.

They're both toast.

My sympathy

However, I don't think there is anything you could have done to prevent it from happening. It looks to me kinda like the cylinder lining flaked off and caused all the damage to the piston??
