As I find myself falling deeper and deeper into this world of chainsaws, I am thinking of buying a tach to make sure my saws are optimized and in tune. I am somewhat new to this and dont really know how to tune a saw by sound and think that starting with at tach and listining to the saw and matching the readings, I will eventully be able to tune by ear. So a few questions to get me started...

-What kind of tach (brand), and where should I look for it?

-Where do I find the numbers for my 360 PRO to match the tach?

-How do you hook one of these buggers up to get readings?

-Do you hook it up and rev it to get the high end reading, wind it down, make an adj. and rev it again for the reading, wind it down, make adj. untill you get it where you want it....?

I want to get one of these rather quickly b/c I have a "Walkerized" muffler comming for my 360 and want to get the saw set right for good safe performance (not too lean or rich), plus as seasons change, I assume my carb settings will need a little tweak here and there, right?

Thanks!

When I set the saw by my ear foam plugs are inadequate. Should I use earmuffs as well? Even in the summer?................... Er....................................................... Duh, I was supposed to shut it off first wasn't I?;)

Thanks to everyone-

I did order a tach from the same company Otto was refering to. Its a 20k digital tach that is supposed to update readings every .5 seconds! Should work like a champ.
Thanks for posting....

I get it rocky-
BUT I do not have enough experience tuning carbs on saws to do it with any amount of confidence by ear. I think of it as though I am a weening pup, I will start with the tach and ween myself off as I learn what the sounds should be as they correlate to the tach readings. My main concern is the HI adjustment. Want to make sure I am not over revving on the high end. Before you know it I will be tunin by ear and sharpening in my sleep!!!

Thanks-

Hey Drew take it easy! Tach whats next home made dino, MSD ignition with computer advance. Hell set that Hi end with some help why ya have it plunged deep in some serious timber. Turn on the fuel till it starts to puke and back it off a little. That was easy!!! If your stock saw is turning it's maximum rated rpm's while barried to the dogs your chains isn't doing it's job. Your right Drew about having some fun and experimenting is how advancement is made so keep us Funnin. The Hoosier

Sharpen your chain it's a jungle out there!!
