In my last post I ask some questions about a 066, well today I went
back and picked up the other 066 with very little compression.
Cleaned it up, pulled the jug off, piston is missing part of the ring land
At the exhaust port, so I know it needs a piston & rings. The jug looks
good to me, no scoring, I can’t get any movement in any direction
from crank, or play in the rod bearing. BUT the crank end of the
rod is very blue like it has been very hot, (I hope that they are this color
from factory, heat treatment) the bearing seems very smooth on the
rod and the crank

Should the crank end of the rod be blue, or is it toast?

Dose the rod bearing float on the crank and in the rod?

How much end play is there for the rod bearing?

Lakeside if you read this, how old is this saw ser# 150687954?
(this is not sarcasm)And I’m working on getting repair manuals
for my saws. Thank you

Thanks, Gary

I just took the piston off the rod, rod dose have
a few thousands play (by feel) up and down as the rod
would travel,

I want to fix to keep, not just patch it up
and sell it. (I would not do that to some one)
If I have to put to much money in it I will part
it out on e-bay, or keep it for parts for my
other 066

Thanks again, Gary

The saw is from very late 2001.

Sorry, the rod end should not be blue - that indicates severe overheating.

If the crank has ANY vertical movement in the rod, it's toast, and given your overheating, probably bad no matter. I doubt your main bearings are in great shape either..

Hmmmm.. Crank, bearings, seals, gaskets, piston and are you sure about the cylinder? I have an 088 that had exactly the same problems, and it was real expensive to fix...

I really don't know about the cylinder, I just went and looked at
it again, turned the lights off and looked at with a good flash light
it nice slick and very smooth to my finger.

So off the top of your head, in parts how much money to
fix it, cylinder kit, crank Assembly, bearings, seals and
gaskets, and any thing else that I mite need?
And can a rookie like me, do the bottom end?
I do want to save money, by doing it my self
but It's more I want to try to do it my self.

Thanks, Gary

If you use Stihl parts (I would on an 066..), it will cost you about $550 - $600 in parts... You might find a friendly dealer that would give you a break considering the prices... maybe.. As for doing it yourself..... hard to say. The bottom end replacements are not that difficult (after you've done a few!) but do require a couple of specialized tools. The clutch side bearing can be a bear at to fit without the correct press and adapters. You can improvise (I did for years) but..

Get a manual and then decide if you have the skills. Don't let the size put you off - it's exactly the same process whether it's an 066 or an 026.

Thank you, Lakeside You win some, you lose some.
I need a manual for the other saw any way. I will
go a head and tear this one down
and try learn too learn a thing or two with it.

Thanks, Gary

Honestly I think I would look for another 066 as a project, I don't know how much you are into this one but you can use it for parts for another 066 or recover some money by parting it out. Lets say you put the 550 into it then lets say it is cheap to by you time and assume that you do an excellent job splitting the case and getting everything aligned. You will be into this saw for 750-800 assuming you are buying you time, and not including what you paid for it initially. how much have you saved?

If you do decide to stick it out you will certainly know that saw and learn a good bit along the way.
