Can anyone direct me to any posts or shop manuals for fixing the recoil on my Stihl 009. It is not the L model but it is all white with the orange filter cover, not the all orange model. Starter rope pulls out fine but does not retract well, usually have to play with it to get it to rewind. Guessing it is the recoil spring. Not sure how to tear into it to even get to the recoil. Any suggestions would be appreciated. I tried doing a search for this but nothing comes up.

Remove the recoil housing from the saw. Take the handle and pull out a little rope. Grab the rope from the back and find the little slot in the pulley. Wind it around once or twice, with the rope in the slot, to put more tension on the rope. If this does not work you may need a new spring. Mike

Ok, I was afraid of this, now I have to show I am stupid. When I look at the saw there is no recoil housing per se. It appears that I have to separate half the case of the saw, to include half the throttle handle in order to get to the recoil. If that makes sense. Not sure if I have to remove the saw handle too or not. Yep, looked at it again and there are at least three screws that need to come out with one them being at least one of the handle screws and the throttle handle as well as it splits down the middle. Sound correct?

That`s correct.

Maybe it will be a pain to work on but kind of a cool little saw. Just different than my other saws and its a blast to run it. Kind of just chews along at a moderate speed. Officially it's the Wood Widows (Mrs.) saw but she hardly ever runs it. She makes pungi sticks down in the old orchard ever year or so. Never bends down to get a flat cut on the saplings that grow up there but creates little angled spikes. I keep thinking that some year I will have a large game animal impaled on them. The 009 Spews bar oil like its an old man drooling but I love running it from time to time. Got a little 12" Stihl bar on it and picco chain. If I can get it up and running again in the morning I am going to take it out to a buddies place and cut some small locust down for him. Thanks so much for all the help!
