I have a tree that is looking bad. I noticed last year that the bark was looking bad on one side but just never took the time or effort to figure it out. Well, yesterday I noticed on the opposite side that it is oozing pretty bad. I don't know what species this tree is either. We bought this home 5 years ago and the tree has always looked healthy.
I may add also that the previous owners had a hack job done on several trees some years ago. There was a huge silver maple that we lost last year, 52" trunk and probably around 70" base. It died from the hack job. They cut 20+ inch diameter limbs back to six feet long.
Here are some pictures of the tree in question, also I have included a picture of a leaf in the palm of my hand. And, this tree was one of the hack job specials if that matters.

The tree has never been hit by a car, it's on a hill and way off the road. It was healthy when we moved here, no bark was missing etc..... I noticed last year that the bark on the one side looked a little different but just ignored it but this summer it got much worse. What could cause this? Also the ozing section that you say is a borer, can that be treated? I would llike to save it if possible, BUT it is near my house.
It may end up in my OWB but I would like to give it a chance.
What species is it? Can you tell be the leaf? The leaf is about 2-3 inches wide.

trt3, your red maple - Acer rubrum is succumbing to stresses. Have a qualified plant health professional out to perform root excavation and test the tree and the soil. The oozing could be an indication of a serious disease. Remediation now could save your tree.

Thanks, I was hoping there may be a chance of saving it. I'll get in touch with someone this week.
