Hi all I am new here and was wondering do any of you have bandmills? Also are any of you in North Carolina? I've only had my mill about 4 months but I have gotten alot of prospects, and a few jobs. Any pointers on getting started with all this please let me know. I have a lumbermate 2000, sthil 044, planer, and a boomtruck. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OUlW21uleL4 Thanks The WoodButcher :

Something you might consider is hitting up local custom wood shops, woodworking clubs and stores such as Woodcraft or Rockler and offer custom cut lumber. I'm sure you can flush up some business there. Best of luck to ya'.

Check with developers of sub divisions. Some may like to have the trees cut into lumber rather than burn them. I just finished a job like that. I put 8,700 board feet of red oak and pine in stacks for the developer.

This is how I get most of my stuff. I just scored another 40" water oak and a 20" elm and I'm working on a deal for over 100 saw logs for free. Many times they are more than happy to give them to you just for removing them.

100 SAW LOGS!!! Aggie you'll have to quit your real job and go into the lumber business. What kind of wood are the saw logs, all different kinds maybe? Where will you store that many logs where you can keep them off the ground and away from the beetles?

Mostly oaks (red, white, post & water), some elms and a few pecans. I think there are a few others but I've only been to the place once. They are on some property that belongs to a friend of my FIL who is privately developing it into ranchettes with a dozen or so lakes and ponds (one will be close to 40 acres). I can store them there or move them to where our friend's bandmill is so space isn't a problem. Bugs could be an issue but I hope to have them milled before it is.

Here in western MI, we're actually having a bit of a shortage of white oak. We could use a few of those logs. If only they weren't that far... The boat builders have been eating up just about everything here.
