Hi, Everyone.

I am presently disassembling the Disston enough to paint her up. Hopefully the paint I bought will match the paint thats left on the saw. Also, am presently looking for materials to try and have new engine decals made up. If I can get the materials I need, I plan to send them to Shapton through oldmercs.com to have them made up. Then hopefully they can be made available for all who want them. Hopefully I'll have her painted by this next weekend. Will post a couple new pictures after the paint job and film is developed. So far this has been a fun project and would again like to thank all for their input.Lewis.

An update.

Well, yesterday I disassembled the saw enough for painting. I had previously, completely cleaned the saw while working on it, so clean up was no problem. Last night I primed and gave some of the parts their first coat of paint. This morning, I gave them a second coat of paint and have started to reassemble some of the parts. Going faster than I expected. Have taken a few pictures, as I go. Hopefully I'll have some pictures to post, of the finished project, for this weekend. Also got a phone call from Mercury sales and service, they have no information on the decals, but referred me to: < www.aomci.org >, he said they could ansure all my questions and provide information on the old saw. Will have to get the time and explore the site. Not cuazy about $50.00 for a 2 year membership. OK. talk to you later. Lewis.

An update.

Well have viseted the amoci site and posted a message looking for decals for the Dissto saw. Got a reply stating for me to visit:<www.ascee.com> , the people their would be able to help me more. I put in a message there and no replies as yet, from them. I did, today, receive 4 photos in an email, of the decals I need for the saw. Was very happy to see them. Have never actually seen the decals before. I have sent an email to Robert Shapton at oldmercs to see if he might want to review the photos and see if he could reproduce them. Does anyone on this site know of someone that could reproduce them, without violating some sort of copywrite laws, etc. Shapton has permession from Mercury to reproduce the Mercury outboard emblems. OK, as I've said, the saw is now running and is now painted. Have taken some pics and will post a couple, when I get them tomorrow. Again, thanks to all for their help and a special thanks to Scott Meuller for his help,Take care, Lewis.

Lewis,

You may want to try this place Solid Design they do custom decals for model railroading. Also you could try some of the places on this site Great Decals. I just pulled them out of the back of a Model Railroader mag so I have no experience with either.

Another sorce if you want mylar or vinyl cut would be to talk to Travis Jorde. He specializes in decals for old John Deere equipment but could probably head you in the right direction. Jorde's Decals

Good Luck.

Don

Thanks for the reply, it will give me other options to check into for reproducing the decals for the saw. Thanks. Lewis.

As promised, More Pictures

I now have the saw back together, running and now painted. All I need is the decals, for the engine. to finish the project. Would like to again, thank everyone for their ongoing help. Enjoy. Lewis

The pictures are as follows:

1st pic. Firsst day saw started. Smoked like crazy. Ran ricn, but ran. Smoke bellowed from the garage, wonder someone didn't call the fire dept. Holly, my wife nearly choked taking this picture. She's a great woman.
2nd pic. Second day running saw after adjusting the old fuel meter. Still smoked like crazy. I then went from 16:1 to 32:1, the saw seemed to run better and of course less smoke.
3rd pic. First view of painted saw. After assembly
4th pic. Second view of painted saw.
5th pic. Third view of painter saw.
6th pic. Me and the Disston
7th pic. Me and the Disston again.
Didn't know if you noticed the red spark plug boot. but have since changed it and put the original back on the saw.

Hi, Stumper.

Thanks, for the reply. I'm just glad the old saw turned out as nice as it did. The main thing for me was to get it running. Was happier than you know what, when she fired up. Still will probably need tinkering with the fuel meter a bit, while under load. But for now will leave her as is. Didn't think it turned out too bad for a 50+ year old saw. Thanks again. Lewis.

Hi, I received an email from Jorde's Decals and they said to send the photos to them and they would evaluate them and let me know if they could be reproduced and if it would be cost effective. I'm at present waiting on a reply form someone who knows a person that mey have already have them made up or has made them up in the past. Will not know untill next week, if the person will have or be able to do it. No hurry, want the paint to cure for at least 30 days before I do any more on the saw. I am hoping to apply the decals and put somesort of clear coat on the saw to help protect it in the future. Thanks, again for your input. Lewis.

Lewis;
Great work! That is one sweet looking piece you have got yourself!

Hi, and thanks for the reply. I think it turned out pretty good for the first try at working on an old Disston. Still hoping to get the decals, Everyone here and a few other contacts have been helpfull, and I appreciated that. Have showen the saw to a couple people and may have leads on a couple of other saws to work on over the winter. Talked to a fellow in Wal-mart, that said his father had an old 2 man saw, when he was a kid. He didn't know where it went, but would check with his brother. Said his father may have traded it for another saw. I would eventually like to acquire one of those 2 man saws. Looks like the start of a interesting hobbie. My father, when I was a kid, had an old Mac., it weighed a ton and had a good size bar(close to 30") from what I can remember. Tried to start it once and it kickbacked and pulled the starter rope out of my hand. Can't remember if it had a compression release or not. I was about 9 years old then. My father and Uncle went halves on the saw. Will have to check with my uncle and see where it ended up. Seems like there was some sort of gearbox drive on the side of it also. Anyone remember of any such Mac.? OK, thanks again, Lewis.
OK, Checked out Mike site and think I've found the saw. Looks like a Mac. 3-25, made in the early 50's. Wonder what that saw would be worth now?

Hi, SWI Don, received an email from Jorden's and they said that it would not be very cost effective to reproduce the decals. Also received an email from Scott Wright, (soliddesign) and he said that he could reproduce them. Told him, that I was waiting for another reply and that I would let him know, if I wanted him to do it. His quote sounds a bit expensive, so I'm waiting to hear from my other sourses. I have a friend in Riio Rancho, NM that knows of someone that might give me a quote, to do the decals. Should hear from them in a few days. Also waiting for a responce from a person, that knows of someone who, has already made the decals or has a way to make them up and possibly would be able to supply them to me. Hopefully something will pan out. OK, take care. Lewis.
