hey folks, I'm over from the lawnsite forum. Have poked around here from time to time when info needed but now I have ?? and hope you can help or give advice. Have a red maple, prolly of the Japanese family, it is an upright variety, 30+ yrs old, 12-15" in diameter at base of trunk. One of my guys caught a lower limb with roll bar and snatched it off. The limb is/was 2.5-3" in diameter and as it ripped it off, peeled the bark 3" wide x 6-8" down. My question, do I need to dress this exposed area with something? Pruning paint, wrap, or what? I need to do what I can to help the wound and prevent any further damage if I can. What's the chance of it killing the tree? Any advice is appreciated. Thanks.

I am a homeowner and waterproofed my my while digging I swung backhoe too far and did pretty much the same thing. Since it was me doing it to my tree I wasnt worried,I am indifferent to the tree, and left it alone. That was 5 years ago and its growing just fine. The wound is also healing itself slowly. Hope this helps.:)

Bummer.

Don't dress it, paint it, wrap it or anything like that, none of that stuff will help and some of it can cause more damage. Just carefully cut back any wood splinters to solid wood and any torn bark to bark that it tight to the wood. A sharp wood chisel or utility knife should work fine, just take care not to damage any bark or wood that's not already damaged. It won't kill the tree, eventually the wound should close over though it will take many years, sounds like it may be a mature specimen so maintaining vigor will help the rate of the wound closing.

Hope this helps.

Amazing the damage was not worse.

It's pitiful that it happened, but a limb that big could have pulled away a much larger section.

Have a picture?

Hey Jeff...do you read your PM's?! I've PM'd you twice, once in response to yours and no response! What gives?

:buttkick:

Thanks for the input guys. We'll hope for the best. Already cleaned up the wound area. Will be checking in from time to time. Now off to the paperwork.

with that much heartwood exposed i would try to do something to stop the cracking. Wrap or seal; probably wrap.
