This is spawned from Rocky's post about who is using what friction hitch. I'd like to build on that to find out what type or rope you're using and what sizes.

8 or 9mm for distels and VT etc. I still like to use a Blakes from time to time also. It seems alot easier to use with pine sap all in it. I've got a couple of 1/2" tails for it.

I have used 1/2 inch hitch cord on 1/2 inch climbing line, both XTC, to climb on Tautline, Blake's, Klemheist, Schwabisch, Distel, and Knut hitches.

Has anyone used 1/2 inch cord and line for a VT hitch?

I like the 3/8 Tenex cords from Sherrill, I bought one of the Ultratech cords and it takes a lot to break them in, they are stiff and when you advance your hitch up it tends to loosen and slide down, I had to switch to a 4/1 distel but now that it is broke in it binds a little and doesnt advance as smoothly. The one thing I dont like about pre spliced cords is that they are about 6 inches to long and there is considerable slop inbetween the hitch and the minder pulley. Stumper gave me a 5/16 Sta Set cord when I was down there climbing for him. It worked well, but the hitch was rather small and tended to burn your hands on descent if you were not wearing gloves. and when you wore ugly gloves the rubber had a tendancy to get caught up in the hitch. I have since retired that cord to use as a minding hitch on a lanyard. I liked the Sta Set, but think I would much rather prefer the 3/8. Oh by the way Justin, thanks for the cord.

Kenn, You are welcome. I climbed today using 3/8ths Sta-set. - I liked it. I was using a 4/1 distel on a new 12strand line. -Best self tending I've ever experienced. Somebody remind me why we all switched to 16 strand ropes?........Oh, yeah-they make better light bull ropes when we buy a new climbing line.:D

I need to get my hands on some of that 3/8. I liked the 5/16, but it was a wee bit to small. Im thinking that it will be the way to go. I dont like all the slop in pre-spliced tress cords. Justin showed me a cool way of attaching my minder pulley directly to my biner that held my cord, before that I was hooking it up to a key chain biner. Kudos Justin, Im sure that technique has been around for awhile. but Im a lil hard headed some times.

PS, Are we gonna get a chance to climb that big ole cottonwood over at the Mansion the next time I come down?

Bishop is now selling the cord from New England that has a sheath that's blended from Nomex/Technora with [I think] a Technora core. This stuff has some really good handling characteristics. The sheath is made from small cords so it has good grip. It also is a bit fuzzy for good grip. NIce stuff!

I've been using 8mm PMI pumpkin line for my advanced hitches on Sampon's Blue Streak. Both lines are brand new and I've been having some trouble with slippage, so I use a 6 over 1 distel with the pumpkin or a broken in piece of .5" with either a Blake's or tautline, depending on what the climb will entail.

i got some new blue streak climbing line about 4 months ago...the slippage went away after a number of climbs and now i love it.

I use 5/16" sta set, but whenever i wear out all 150' i have of it, i am gonna get 3/8". Like rocky said, I have a problem with the heat buildup and it grabbing. I am using a 4/3 VT; very recently i knoticed what was making my last crossover wrong, making the VT come apart. I tried a 3/8 tennex cord, but not very much. I had forgotten to grab some more sta set and its what I had with me. I think that for my weight and climbing habits 3/8" sta set will be the best. I liked how the 3/8" tennex was easier on my hands, and seemed to deal with the heat better.

Gotta go to class now haha

On a roughly 50-50 basis:

5/16" Ultra Tech with a 4/1 Distel,
