I'm guessing this isn't normal? Echo 3510, been acting funny awhile now so I looked at it. Definitely not running like it used to, like it won't stay in tune or can't get enough fuel. 50:1 red armor but also noticed this red dusting everywhere, maybe it was running lean. thanks for looking!

The hole in the piston is a non issue , just a machining alignment centre as advised , typical oem Echo piston trait , seen it on a few aftermarket snowmobile racing pistons also . As for the colouration , I have witnessed this colour as either orange to bright red within numerous race gas fueled snowmobiles & bikes . Usually octane boosting additives are the root cause . I agree that manganese tricarbonyl is most likely the culprit as Jellyfish & Kevin has indicated . I briefly used such a additive within my Dynaglide due to lack of adequate octane gas while on a trip down state . Actually Canada is currently considering removal of MMT within their unleaded fuels , due to potential higher Nox emission issues apparently ?

Echo is notorious factory lean , have you retuned ( fatter) from the factory setting via removing the limitors , since you never mentioned how many hours are on the saw brother . Also changes within ambient temperatures or barometric pressure or dirty air filter can really effect your state of tune on these small engines ?

I was going to mention that Canada uses MMT in their pump fuel still.

Yeah , health reasons also in confined areas although , not at benzene hazard levels which have been lowered within pump gas significantly but suspected central nervous system effects potential . Not sure where it is at currently as far as legislation over here ?

It isn't used in the US. It was thought there might be potential health issues with it and also issues with fouling catalytic converters.
I don't know the validity of either issue as the EPA quashed its use around the time MTBE/ETBE was phased out. This is going by memory as it was 20 years ago roughly.

Yeah , its been around for close to 50 yrs not sure if at current levels . I remember O2 sensor failures & 2nd generation Cats plugging issues , till they changed the pellet densities & shell thickness to achieve a hotter burn rate within the converter . I guess we will see where it leads to up North here ? I doubt very fast with Trudeau still at the helm , He's more interested in banning handgun ownership lately !

Handguns have for all practical purposes been banned for years in CA.
Mean while here in MT, US I can open carry, concealed carry with no permit and I can just walk into a store and buy one.
