I have a 50' tall Norway Maple in the corner of my yard. It has hole in it at the intersection of its 3 major limbs. The hole sits about 18' high. The diameter of the hole is about 4" wide by 12" deep. Either birds or squirrels have used it I was told to cover up the hole with a piece of tin. But then i read to let it breath as closing it up will cause for more decay.

Any thoughts or suggestions are appreciated...

The first thing to consider is whether or not there is a target: children playing, house, powerlines (if you really care) where the structural weakness is a concern. If the answer is yes, then consider further. Weight reduction of the crown will reduce stress on the decayed portion. No, do not cover, for the reason stated.

I can't remember and am not about to look up the standards, but if you have something in the range of >30% of the diameter with sound wood then its within reason that it is stong enough- this could be examined with a tree auger-- don't quote me on the number but Stupsi the tree care hedgehog will tell you, its a book, a heck of a book.

Plant a replacement, removal is inevitable. Could be many years out though.

But dont ask me, I'm just a timberfaller.:chainsaw:

You'd be amazed by what us fallers see still standing, but, then again, there isn't a target out there.
