Does anyone else here burn wood in an old Holland coal furnace? My elderly grandmother has been burning wood in a Holland furnace for over 60 years. The thing is awesome, very slick grate and shaker system, extremely easy to light, burns for hours and hours, it accepts big chunks through the door and the heat from it is nice and even. Whats better is it works with no electricity, so even in a power outage the house will stay nice and toasty. I have been in her place on a 0 degree day with a howling wind and the whole house is 70-75. Some of these had thermostatically controlled combustion dampers but hers is manual. On a very cold day it needs a bit more air to keep a hot fire going. Not the most efficient wood furnace but it sure feels nice when it is going.
