I think I know why this saw has no spark, but I need help getting to the points to clean them. I cant seem to get the recoil housing/starter off the saw. can someone please show me how this _____ing assmebly goes together/comes off?

it doesnt show the starter assembly in the IPL. at least I didnt see it in there, and I looked about 10 times.

Now this is a coincedence I just got a 7-19 Saturday, no spark either. The 17 looks similar. I got the rewind and flywheel off last night, not easy, not like a modern saw anyway. The best I can tell you is there is the rewind spring is wrapped, hooked, into a one way cam(?)that is on the crankshaft, I had to unwind the spring from the cam to get the housing and rewind pulley off in one piece. After that three screws for this cam and your at the flywheel. I hope you have a small puller for the flywheel, other wise I don;t know how you can get it off.

I was not getting spark because the coil wire was not making a good contact inside the coil itself. Everything esle was is in good shapeon this saw, amazingly, except the gas tank was full off old gas with a mix ratio of probaly 10 or 16/ 1, you could scrape the junk off the sides of the tank, stunk really bad too.

So I have to ask the question, is there anything I can do to get this coil wire sealed in good to make sure it stays in contact with the coil when I get the saw running or anyone have a coil to sell.

I hope this helps somewhat, I am no expert here, this saw is as old as I am.

Larry

Rewind and coil wire.

Hello OSD. Took me awhile to figure out how to remove the rewind on my 5-20, but finally figured it out. As Larry said you have to work the spring a bit, but she come right off with a little patience.

Axeman. Sent you a reply to your PM on the coil wire. Everyone take care. Lewis Brander.

Its tricky, I wish I had a better camera so I could post pictures of how it goes together for future reference and others to learn from. this is certainly a learning experience for me.

Oh, yeah, I need a puller, or some ideas for one with this saw. I think a trangle shaped metal piece with 3 screws in the outside edge, and one bolt to pull from the center of the crank would work, since this saw does have a ball style starter and 3 screws hold it to the flywheel.

Removing Flywheel:

OSD. When removing the flywheel I had a helper and what I did was to put the flywheel nut on the crank so that it was flush with the end of the threads. I used 2 large screw drivers to lift the flywheel slightly and gave the nut and crank a couple solid hits with a brass hammer. On both saws the flywheels poped off with no problem. Just be carefull while prying, so as to not break the backing plate, make sure the nut is even or flush with the crank and give her a couple solid blows with the brass hammer. I figured that this was a one time deal and wouldn't hurt anything. Just check things over, clean the points, regap, etc and make sure all is set right and working so that you don't have to remove the flywheel a dozen time. Good luck. Lewis.

Well, now I know WHY I had no spark, the points were clean, but the coil covering was cracked, which evidently let moisture into it, and kept it from developing a spark. now I need a new coil for this thing.

Magneto coil.

OSD. Had the same problem with one ot the Homelite 5-20's. You could try and warm up the coil in an oven (low temperature for a coule hrs) and reseal the outside, I used shelac. Tried this on one 5-20 and it worked. The other had to be replaced. Got an NOS coil from Hawkins Brothers. Good luck. Lewis.

This coil is cracked all the way around. plus about half the plastic is actually missing.

I havent tried to see if it has any smell yet. I'm starting to think tearing down that saw would be less confusing than what Im doing right now. I HATE CHANGING BRAKE PADS! Now someone send me a keg of beer.
