Hello all. I have been a registered user for a while, but never needed to post due to the wealth of info already posted. However, here I finally am, asking for some help. I have a Super XL Auto (UT # 10499B) that I believe needs a carb adjustment, or worse. Here's what happened... I gave the saw to my cousin as a gift 6 months ago; it ran fine. He was using it last week and it started sputtering and just quit. It needed a coil (which, by the way, I have found a parts source for these saws, and I mean NOS, not used) and I replaced it. The saw would not start. I changed the plug, it started after really playing with the choke and throttle and a lot of pulls. It seemed to idle ok, and after running a little, you could get one good rev out of it, but then the second pull on the trigger would stall it out. If you revved it once then let it idle, pulled the choke out a little, then pushed it back in, you could get another rev out of it. It also seems like it is spitting fuel out of the exhaust. It probably needs a carb rebuild/adjustment, but I want you guys' opinion that play with these reed valve-equipped homelites a lot. I'm damn good with the ported piston intake Stihls, but I have never messed with reed valves. Just as a little background on myself, I am a car mechanic and have been one for over 10 years, so I know my way around a shop, just a little wet behind the ears when it comes to some small engine configurations. Thanks in advance.:chainsaw:

Sounds like it's indeed in need of a carb rebuild, as well as a fuel line replacement. Modern gas tends to turn the old lines into chewing gum IME. Bits of it get into places in the carb where you don't want gunk...

Homelite Super Xl Carb. Settings

I would also check the muffler for carbon build up and while it is off check the piston and cylinder for scoring. Tom
