My neighbor gave me his sxl to clean in my parts washer.

It is a newer one with low hours. He has always had trouble with the fuel boiling. I have heard of this on XL-12's/SXl's

I asked him if it was too len on the hi side, or if he was using cheap oil & he said no.........

I have been using SXL's for years & never have had this problem.

Anyway, I pulled the muffler &...... you guessed it.

The piston is scored on the ex. side. It is mainly around the ring lands.

The rings also look "Stuck" in that area due to carbon build up.

It still has great compresion & the rings are not tore up yet.

the other side of the cyl looks great.

I have always been under the understanding that piston scoring on the ex. side = too lean on the hi side/running hot.

It sure did look like it was running lean to me. The plug was white/grey in color & so was the inside of the muffler.

I am hoping the cyl will clean up & we can get away with new rings. I already have a good used piston for it.

Any advice appreciated.

the first picture is of the ring lands, the second is the piston skirt
