XL2s use a pressurized oil tank. There should be a duckbill valve mounted on a short porous metal rod on an oil line at the top of the oil tank. If the duckbill is bad or you see a bare line, then bar oil can get sucked into the crankcase, especially when tilted as you described. Some of the XLs have a diaphram pump that can be the source of the problem as well. There's a pressure test procedure to see if this is the problem.

Good luck,
Dan

A bit more info. If yours has a diaphram pump, here's a page from the IPL that may help a bit. My apologies for the size, but I'm not a a computer with a resize app on it. This is for a super 2, but I think the pump config would be the same. If you apply pressure (5-8 pounds) to the inlet for the oil (20) and see it doesn't hold, then the pump body (16) and plunger (15) probably is where your problem lies. You will need to replace these parts.
