Because i'm Curious and theres alot of
experience Displayed in this Forum i was curious as to how many of your Would rather use Ropes V/S spikes for a removal of O lets say a Healthy Oak tree
I personally Prefer Using the Ropes Mainly because i find spikes uncomfortable and actually cause irritation to my ankles and there is much more versatility with ropes.Of course given the option I'd take My Bucket truck
:D

No spurs mostly, have gotten out of the 's-kill' of their use.

But, for straight vertical climb; or dogging in for topping/ catching to same spar (especialy vertical) spurs i believe is best.

Ive tried both at the same time but the spurs kept getting in the way and i kept
Spurring the Darn Rope.

I f i can get along withou them I will not wear gaffs. But many trees they are nesseary. I frequently use both in removals, especialy silver maple and the like.

I've heard folks say they do removals without spikes, and for some trees it may be just as easy, but this is genrally not true.

Climbing well without spikes is a skill, we know that, but climbing well with spikes is a skill too.

Like any other climbing technique, it takes the proper equipment, and experience. This can be hard for the guys that don't get involved with many removals, but if you learn how to use them properly, you will be a much more efficient worker.

Once you get good at using spikes you will find they greatly increase productivity. You can still use almost all your non-spike techniques, then add the benifits of spiking when it's advantageous.

Mike I agree and i'll Admit i have alot more experience using rope and saddle
than with spikes. Is anyone aware of Training materials available for productive use of Spikes? Im versed in safety with them would just like some productivity
Training.

Yes, it is a skill that i have lost somewhat form not using them anymore. Then when i do; i really realize that!

But nothing has pushed my climbing skills, and hense rigging skills than setting them aside. For it takes extra control and tecnique to replace them with; and now have taken that experience and folded it over into rigging; for it is all rope work.

So anytime i learned lesson in rigging tried to apply to climbing etc.
