Beginning to shop for a new splitter. I do not want a tip up for various reasons, one being that the wheels/axles are in the way of the operator.

Are there any commercial horizontal only splitters with power equivalent to the tip-ups? I haven't found any yet but did find a HF one, only 15 ton IIRC.

Harry:

I noticed the "wheel in the way" problem you mentioned with the smaller Cub Cadet/MTD/Yardman splitters. The larger model doesn't appear to have that same problem as it has a full length beam - but it is up around $ 2,000.

I bought a Iron & Oak 26 ton model and the wheels are not in the way. It wa a bit over $ 2,200 with free shipping.

Harry you have a few choices. Here are a few.

Iron and Oak http://www.logsplitters-ironoak.com/itemlist.php?mode=category&categoryid=2&parentid=103

American CLS http://www.americanmsr.com/home.htm

Speeco has a 15 ton http://www.speeco.com/products/?CurOpen=Log Splitters#List

Northern Tool up to 42 ton http://www.northerntool.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/category_6970_100+1465

Or course Timberwolf http://www.timberwolfcorp.com/log_splitters/

Ram Splitter http://www.ramsplitter.com/

.... and a bunch of others supersplit, etc.

Good luck in your search.

Turnkey I have an older 'American' splitter it's horizontal only...the splitting rail is only 10-12 inches off the ground so it easy to ramp up the the bigger pieces I come across. Most of the time I'm just sitting on a log or bucket while splitting...I really like it cause splitting is easy. They got a website and are made in upstate NY...no Chinese steel either.

Have you thought about a lift arm to assist on a vertical splitter. I used a timber wolf and it was great. but I could not afford one. I started with a well used vertical/ horizonal splitter and welded it horizonal just because it was worn out . I am working on a lift arm but the beam is too short. I wish now I just started from scratch but live and learn. I think you might wanna go to the classified section and look at the home build splitter with a lift and make your own.
