Heres the deal, I own a 048av, my 1st saw, I have had it all tuned up. It seems to cut fairly well, but when I am cutting a green frozen tree it seems to be all it can handle. Does any one know how much horsepower my 048 has? How about cubic centimeters? I would like to know because if I buy a new one I would like to be able to compare it to my old one. I've seen a few 066 magnums around, I am curious to know the differences between the two saws. I am thinking that I want a saw that scares me, one that rips and tears and leaves nothing left. One that will make you nervous when you start it. I would prefer a second hand saw so any suggested older models would be appreciated.

Check with Rupedoggy on this fourm, I know he had a 066 for a very reasonable price. I was going to buy one from him untill I picked up a 046, and found it's enough saw for me unless or untill I decide to run a mill.
Thanks

Hi ,
That's a powerfull saw for your first.Use plenty of caution and allways give thought to whats the safest way to cut the wood in front of you.If you're cutting tree tops in an area that been logged watch out for the twisted branches with weight on them. They are as dangerous, even more so,as the saw you're cutting with.If you know all this that's great,if not don't rush, give yourself plenty of time to learn. It's only the tip of the iceburg.
Check out some smaller saws of various names.Pickem up and handle them, you'll find one that has a better fill for you then others,it just feels more comfortabe in you hands. You'll probably pay less for a new smaller saw then for a used bigger one.At the end of the day, after slinging a smaller saw around, you might even want to kiss you wife or girlfriend!

Stihl crazy.......after all these years:)

Boy do I know how you feel. My first saw was a 056 super and it was OK but I wanted more. I hopped that up and have been in this performance mire ever since. I really enjoy it though. I do have a saw that scares me. It scares me everytime I run it. I let my brother (sawracr) run it and it scares him too! Most people won't even try to run it when offered. It is a 500cc Kawaski motorcycle engine that has been converted to a chainsaw. I would suggest that if you want to be scared, get one. Cut off the transmission, fit a couple places to hang on, fit up a bar, chain and drive system and be scared! Mike

Your 048 is 76cc displacement. That is 4.64 cubic inches. I agree that should be plenty for your first saw. It may be that the saw is worn to the point that it is not getting all the power the factory built into it. Use it for a while and get proficent with it. Try your friends saws also. Some dealers have demo- saws for good customers. After you have seen several different types and models you will have a better idea what you want. I have lots of used saws and will find what you need. If you want even more I can hop them up for you also. Mike

We all want "MORE HORSEPOWER", its the eternal quest. I bought an 046 and now wish i had an 066/385, not because i need the extre umph, but just cause it would be cool. Look at the 385 or 066 if your going to get a new saw, you wont be dissappointed. An if the stock versions arent enough there are meny guys here that can make the stockers scream.

RupeDoggy,

Is that 500cc as fun as i think it is? I think after i graduate from college i might have to look through the junk yards or repo lots for a Yamaha R6. It has a 600cc 4 cyl, but she is rev limited at 16,000 R's. A few billet parts here a handle there and i might have something.

Mike,
I race a mini sprint that has a 600cc honda, That should make a rippin' saw!!!! I haven't heard anything about the 066 magnum?? Would that be much more powerful than my 048?Thanks for the words of advice.

I have to agree 76cc is alot for your 1st saw. It should be able to really scare the crap out of you:D It probably needs a good ring job, new gaskets etc. It shouldnt cost to much to get it back in shape. Alot less than a new saw.

Hey can you post a pic of that 500cc saw? Sounds like fun to run. And given the chance I know that I would run it in a heart beat :D
If you could give me a few pics that would be cool.

Thanks,
chris

the Difference between an 046 and a 066M is like night and day. I really like the 066. its a great runner for work applications. But running it to fell trees could make for a long day.

Later,
Chris

Has anyone ever built up a saw using a motor from an H2 or H1 Kawisaki engine or a T500 Titan Susuki ?

046- good felling, limbing ect saw.
066 great long bar saw
084/088 long bar saw ONLY
Torqueis what the HUGE saws have, SPEED is what you want for production. Always remember that- i.e., an 046 will run rings around an 066 until you but a looong bar on both. Bigger is NOT always better.

manofstihl,

that's a funny comment.
The only way it could possibly be accurate is if you are referring to operator efficiency due to the 046 being lighter.

Given the same bar length and sprocket teeth, there is no way a smaller saw will cut as fast. Dang close in small wood of course.

Sure, since the 046 may have a bit more chain speed, it would cut faster if you weren't dogging it in hard. But why not use a saw to its maximum efficiency?

Now I am a little confused. One says in certain areas my 048 will run circles around an 066 because of chain speed. One disagrees. I do know one thing is that my old 048 weighs twice as much as a new 066. I thought that an 066 would cut faster because of more horsepower. The 048 will have to work for now I guess. I like it other than the fact it weighs as much as a small passeger car.

Wait a minute, My saw is an 048 av super not a 046. Now I am really lost.

______________

because bigger is always better, I thought, now I confused?
