I bought a 630a about a month ago and it's time to swap out teeth. I'm think about going to yellow jackets, but the wheel is showing some wear with elongated holes, so I'm thinking it’s new wheel time soon. Should I just grab a vermeer wheel and dress it with yellow jackets or upgrade to a sandvik? What are the cost differences?

Meanwhile I want to finish off the pro series teeth I have, but some of the pockets will not break loose. I've been dousing them in PB, but I'm starting to think about using the hot wrench.

Is it common or even advisable to go to this extent on the pro pockets? Thanks for any input in advance.

I managed to win after a couple days of PB blaster showers. Wheel needs replaced soon.

Does anyone have a rough idea how much an 18" sandvik would run?? Or basically how much more than stock?

I was quoted about a grand on one for my 630B a last year if I remember correctly. You can just call sandvik though. Think I was only on the phone with the guy for 5 minutes. Not sure how good a sandvik is on lower horse units though.

Thanks for the reply. I left them some contact info, and considered calling them today, but I was busy with other things.

I figure if they make them for the other 27 horse self propelled units with 18" wheels, I might be able to take advantage of the upgrade. I keep reading about how well they do, how smooth they are, and how sharp they stay, but no one ever talks price, just that it's more expensive.

I don't mind throwing an upgrade at the older machine if it is that much better.

I considered greenteeth, but hear they fling debris everywhere compared to the sandviks. I can't imagine yellow jackets are much better than greenteeth, but at least I can buzz over to vermeer and grab them at will.

So basically, it's about twice as expensive for maybe not quite twice the gains. Thanks.

I haven't had an issue with excess debris with my greenteeth. Only beef is that they dull pretty quick in our rocky soil. But that's also a plus as they're super easy to change. Not sure how easy sandvik is but it looks a bit harder. The main reason I went greenteeth is I don't intend to keep my 630b a very long time and figured the majority of guys in the market for an older grinder like that wouldn't know the benefits of a sandvik and it could be difficult to recoup my investment. Let me know how you make out, Biggie.

It's good to get some positive feedback on the greens. They would say that the greens cut fine, just that the sandviks tuck everything under the machine so much better by comparison and it saves clean up time.

I'm set to go exhaust some pro teeth and then I'll switch out the wheel and go with something better one way or the other.

That's an excellent point about not recouping the investment in that portion of the market, that very likely could be the case. I was hoping to doll up the old unit this winter and perhaps sell it using the sandvik as a selling point if it were to work out, but the yellowjackets or greenteeth would easily do likewise over pro teeth anyway.

Thanks, I'll let you know how it pans out.

Bit of an update.

Just got off the phone with Dave at New River, had an excellent converstation. He's researching the specs for a wheel for the 630a. We are looking at a 1/2" wheel or 3/4" tapered down to 1/2" at the cutters. He thinks he can keep it well under a grand all dressed out. As the more expensive 1 1/4" wheels for the 252 and 630b run about a grand ready to go.

Considering Vermeer wants $430 before tax for a stock wheel, and greenteeth want's $375 before tax for a kit (didn't bother pricing yellowjackets), looks like I'll get a bigger bang for my buck with a Sandvik.

I'm stumping with the proseries for now, but hope to have the sandvik before I finish my current list. More to come....:D

Good work, Biggie. Let me know how that sandvik treats you.
