I made this little hook like peice of metal to hold my tophandle in a tree. Im going to put some liquid rubber on there so no rust gets to it. Ekka has something like this but Im not sure how close mine is to his.

Heres some pictures...

I have always used a hook on my saddle at the back of my hip for my climing saw (since the 70's!). We usually bought one of those large snap hooks and busted off the thin metal snap that closed the hook and sewed a hanger which we riveted to the saddle. Works great for one handed placement of saw.

This rig looks like the saw would never fall off while moving around...which does hapen with a smaller hook.

I wonder why nobody has made one for sale? I see lots of folks using a rock climbers quick draw biner with the bent gate for this use. You can one hand those on and off OK too.

Hmmm....
I could make millions! LOL
But I think one of them Austrailan saddles have one on there but Im not sure.

1423, I think your right about the ausi making one first. Same kinda thing but the ausi one had another piece tacked to the part that goes behind the saddle so the hook doesn't sit flat in front. I think there's was rubber coated as well. Just watch...in another year or two some one will market them and clean up! HC

Hey now dont be taken my ideas! LOL I want $20 finders fee.

Hope you can make it work Rolla. But if you pattenize it I might have to kill ya. :chainsaw: :)

on most harnesses you will find a gap behind the d rings or other attachment points that you just feed it into from the hook end first, the "T" at the top stops it pulling right through.

The only worry I would have with this is the allowance of the saw fall off. This worry is probably why you can't find a hook like this at places like Sherill. I use the snap in the pic attached and put that through the loop on my saddle. Never had a problem hooking and unhooking my saw with one hand and never had to worry about dropping my saw on someone below.

When I started climbing in 1973 I used a hook like that. The buy that taught me to climb had been using it for YEARS before that. Ours were made from flat galvanized strip. It is the strip taht is woven into the end of chain link fences to secure them to the corner post.

Believe me, even deep hooks don't keep the saw from falling out and hitting the ground. I am SO lucky that I never hit anyone before changing my setup and using a lanyard too.

The hook is not designed as a replacement for a lanyard, it is used with a lanyard. You use a lanyard with a ring in it about 8 inches from where it attaches to the saw. Its always attached with a 'biner to the back of your harness and when you move about the tree you put the ring on the hook so the saw isnt dangling round your feet catching on everything. Plus the saw is right there beside you when you need it. How much time and effort do you spend hauling up a saw from hanging below your feet over the course of a day, a week, a month, a year......

If your saw twists just right on those unlocking biners away it goes. I use a locking biner to attach the end of my lanyard to my belt and an unlocking biner clipped into the ring by the handle which I use to clip and unclip the saw when working. I might give the hook a try and see how it goes.

I just hook the end of the lanyard on the ****** first and the loop second. All the guys I worked with did the same thing and I never did see one come off. Just because I didn't doesn't mean it can't happen I guess.

I dont like it. I wouldnt want my saw to come off. That sure seems very possible with that set up. I have a one of those petzl biners made of some sorta plastic on my right side. Its big enough that I can just snap a saw on and off one handed.
