How do you market your business?

I am starting up my business and although I am pretty busy with referrals, I am looking for cost effective ways to market my services.

I have heard that dropping off flyers in the mailbox is actually illegal so I am searching for other suggestions that have worked.

What are you guys doing?

Just word of mouth. I'm on a 33 tree job now that was was word of mouth through 5 customers.
