How do you tell if an 044 is a Magnum?

I have three 044's one of which i was told (by original owner) that piston was 50mm so i know its not a magnum, but the other two i don't know, is there way with just the serial #'s to tell? Neither of the two have a magnum sticker but one has the oval type airfilter.

I believe all 044 are the same.

You may be right but i see on fleabay 044 magnums and 044's i thought the magnum was the same bore as the 046 at 52mm's and the regular 044 at 50mm's dia.

Look at the series number, 1128 is 044 & 046, and the bore will definitely tell you if it's a mag.

Series number is stamped all over the saw. The mag I believe was 52mm?? But don't quote me on it.

Edit: I could be thinking of the 046 too??

Okay... So after looking, the 044 wasn't "mag'd" until the switch to 440. I think? LOL

As in MS 440 MAG

I think that's right. The "magnum" is a 440 which basically has a heavy-duty air filter (similar to the 460) and maybe some upgraded internals. There were no 044 magnums....unless someone bought some stickers.

One of the saws has the heavier airfilter system but the top cover saids 044 so perhaps someone added one or the other after? Isn't there a way to tell with the serial #"s. Just don't want to tear into the piston/cylinder yet to measure.

044's came with the HD air filter and without. My 044 is bone stock and has the HD filter. Came that way new.

Nope, the latest ones had more in common with the 440, except for the fuel and oil caps - and were rated at .2kW more than the older ones - I believe those were the "Magnums", but not sure....

I believe the change happened in 1999 or so.

Um, from what I have read here on AS the only difference is 10mm wrist pin early 044's, HD and non HD filter versions, and the MS 440 change to the flip caps. The Magnum is just a damn sticker. If Im wrong, show me discernable proof.

Whenever I see one of these threads, I get to debate in my mind whether I want to answer, since this has all been hashed out already in past threads. I'll do the short and sweet here. SawTroll is on the right path- there was an 044 Magnum. There are identifiable traits between different 'specimens' of 044 and 440 saws. The short of it is like Niko said- there was an uprated engine featuring the 'Optimized" cylinder and piston which was part of the 044 'Magnum' designation. Other "Magnum' features included the compression release, the change to the teflon-coated base gasket, the 'lightweight' flywheel coupled with the 'intelligent' ignition module, different carburetor, different intake boot, different clutch, etc.

So yeah, there was an 044 Magnum. There was an 046 Magnum. There was a 440 Magnum, and there's a 460 Magnum.

The saw has had a 20 year lifespan...many running changes in the production. A peek at the IPLs will give clues.
